For years (approx 25) I've fished a Garcia Mitchell 710 as my primary "catch all" reel... same one for 25 years to be exact. I have a spare just
in case my original dies, but have not even put line on it yet. I have a few other automatics and several non automatics but for some reason really like the
710. I've heard people say it's not fishing if you use an automatic and some people "few" like them (the weight throws some people off) some
are indefferent. just wanted an assessment of where most of you stood on the subject.

Jeff,
I own quite a few automatics -- but I don't fish any. (Of course, I don't fish anything very often) I started picking them up about 20 years ago just because I like the mechanics. Dennis |

I often fish an automatic. Sometimes the weight is exactly what's needed - ideal to balance a heavy stick. I fish primarily for smallmouth so there's
not much concern over backing or long runs. How can the use of an automatic fly reel be considered anything other than legitimate fly fishing. BTW, the 710 is
my choice, too...

I have several from different makers that my grandfather left me. I never saw him fish anything but autos. I have them on display with some of his other
stuff. Unless I'm missing something, they all seem to be heavy and clunky and ugly and I wouldn't consider fishing one again (one of my first fly
reels was a shakespeare auto that I used when I swung, god forbid, minnows in the early season). To me, fly reels should have a certain look and feel that
I've never experienced with an auto.

Don't own any and wouldn't care to.
But if I did, I sure wouldn't listen to anyone who claims it's not really flyfishing because of my choice of reel. |

Yeah, it probably helps to know how to adjust the action so as to back the spring off of full speed retrieve.
I ran into an old veterano on Penn's Creek last years during the cicada hatch who was fishing with a Mitchell 710 and an Abu glass rod. He was knocking those brownies down, too. Zip, zip zip. Only guy I've ever seen on a trout stream with one. |

I fished them in the 60's for a bit. Nice for picking up line quickly when fishing in a boat. But with my fishing style I like to palm the reel for some of
the blinding rushes of our big rainbows here in Canada. Autos are pretty neat, and I have a few as collectors but don't fish them any more.
Often I have been exhausted on trout streams, uncomfortable, wet, cold, briar scarred, sunburned,
mosquito bitten, but never, with a fly rod in my hand have I been in a place that was less than beautiful.
