Finding a reel |

How would someone go about finding a good Dingley or perhaps a LHW Perfect? I have been on the lookout and searching the web for quite some time without any
luck.
Thanks |

There are quite a few tackle dealers with on line stores, there is also the place of which we speak not and rymes with sea day. You could also post a wanted ad
in the for sale part of forum. There have been lots of both sold in last few months. On sea day you do best when you get everyone from here distracted as
competion is steep on the good reels. How much you want to spend? Daryl

I guess it is not so much about what I want to spend as what can I afford. I see all of these reel on the forum and it gets me all worked up. I am assuming I
would probably have to sell a reel or two to afford one. I have a Hardy featherweight and a Lightweight Bougle III that I could probably sell or trade in on
one. I might also sell one of my silk lines. I don't know, just depends on the reel I guess. I just have an itch at the moment
What would be a ballpark price on a LHW Dingley or Perfect? |

If your looking for a Lefty from Dingley your chances aren,t great, I used to wind with my left hand and learned to use right as love old reels and other than
expensive hardy perfects there are next to no leftys around. I would,nt even guess at a price on a dingley, I think a Hardy in left hand wind would start
around 5-600 hundred for a user reel not to pretty or rare and goes up from there... If you can,t train your self to wind right handed another option is to
either get Bulldog to rebend a spring to favour left wind ,lots of good feed back on that idea, although mostly on young,s ,I bet he would do a Dingley or at
least give it a good effort. Another option is toget a caliper spring one and bend the springs to favor left, risk is if you brake spring you got parts. Last
thing I can think of is if you just want to use it and don,t care about devaluing it,buy a click pawl dingley and add a pawl post to it. Iv,e never done it
,yet, but just got a Farlows from UK lastweek that some one had measured carefully and added a tapped screw for a pawl post and flipped spring over. Its shown
on Farlows check post and who ever did it did a nice job. reel may have no collector value, but you get a reel to use and maybe another lefty will want it
later. Some thoughts on subject. Someone correct me if I,m a mile out on hardy lefty price. Daryl

I think that showdown going on this weekend in Tampa has something to do with either a LHW Dinlgey or Hardy being up for sale.
On a serious note a vintage LHW Hardy perfect is something that is fought over and are not cheap. dder's #'s would be a steal and I would imagine that one would have to reach a little higher. Generally you will be in direct competition with one of the fellas responding to you here. Hardy's do come around now and again. As far as Dingleys go in LHW they are something to be treasured. You could get a caliper and have the springs bent (ouch). However, in regards to the perfect style those that have a one can not even come up with a value. The collecting world would be very jealous of you to say the least. Hardy is a spoon in a haystack, the Dingley would be the head of the pin

I'm a LHW guy, no I don't want to change to RHW just to fish with so cool looking reel. I can keep my 1920 reels on the shelf and be happy.
Because I fish LHW I bought a few Winston Perfects before they jumped up to the $ 750-850 + range. I like the extra wide size spool that Hardy built for the Winston reel. Its a great way to fish a smaller dia. reel with a larger line. I also started using the Bougle. I have 3 sizes and they have become my favorite reels. I bought some extra spools and use them the most now. I love the sound they make. I have several of the RHW oldies but the 1960 youngs can be used LHW by just fliping the pawls. They are real nice reels, but not as nice as a perfect style reel. Alan

I think the only way you will find a reasonably priced LHW Perfect, other then being very lucky, and if you consider around $750 reasonably priced, is to buy a
new one. I looked at new Perfects at the Somerset show and they are beautifully made to my eye. They also are currently made in the UK so if it matters to
you it avoids the Korea debate. With the decline of the British pound against the dollar they have dropped in cost at several British web sites you can find
in the recent Hardy threads on this forum. That is where the $750 cost comes from, they are more expensive at several US dealers and the dealer I asked at
Somerset said they were not permitted to discount, for what its worth. A classic LHW Perfect in a small size recently sold online for over $3500. Alan

If you're willing to get a non-Perfect style reel with no agate line guard, many vintage Dingleys and Hardys can be used LHW by either flipping the pawl or
tweaking the spring. If you're uncomfortable doing it yourself, Bulldog1935 can do it for you for a reasonable amount. Hardy Uniqua reels are an example.
Beautiful classic lines and solid build from the 1920's thru 40's. I have 3 different styles of Dingleys from the same era that have been adjusted to
equal bias or LHW bias. I love the way they look on vintage and new bamboo.

What would something like this be worth? I know it is not extremely old, but LHW and what looks to me to be an old red agate. This one just went off a
week or so ago. I am looking for a reel to fish more than to sit on a shelf. Something to complement the cane. I do prefer the lead finish to the painted,
but it sounds like you are going to have to take what you can get.

that is a very nice condition, late 70s reel, LHW.
IMO, it's worth very close to the (lowest) price of the new anodized Perfects (still made in Alnwick), and inside, it will have the same checkwork. It's a "root beer ceramic", which, of course, the new reels have man-made "agates" as well. (agatine?) good luck
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

![]() FlymanDan, I'll meet you there with Richard (formerly known as
Canadian,eh?) We'll hoist our 3" LHW Dingley Perfects and knock our empty glasses down (of Lagavulin). This is beginning to sound like a Joni
Mitchell tune, whot? I think I'll fish mine more this spring...so I can get some new shots with speckled beauties and recent acquisitions of the cane
variety.

Like I said before...the 3'' Dingley guys should either make t-shirts or be allowed access to the lounge at the Explorers Club in NYC.
also my thoughts , it's a very small club were in , i know of 8 members , we can sit back and enjoy some fine cigars and sip on crown , do you want me to trade something for that case someone has listed on the sale page , we can pass them out and smoke'm at our first meeting , do you think we should let the ''odd'' hardy guy in if he has a LHW 2 7/8 and only if it's 100% correct

Oh, you're a mean ol' daddy, Freestoner...Yes! I like the idea of that club, and if I keep drinking McClelland's (the poor man's single malt)
I may be able to pay my dues!
Richard, that ugly fish is a Maine smallmouth from the Sebasticook river. I think I can dig up a few shots of that reel with some prettier Kennebec landlocks. I'll start searching.

Gentlemen
I picked up a Hardy Perfect about a year or so ago. I recently got the Hardy Angel 4/5 (British) online. I spent about 440. This can be done. The pound to the buck is low. Plus you deduct VAT. I have seen the new Perfects. I would not spend 990 bucks. Unless you want it badly. There are plenty of Perfects, LHW from the mid 1960-70 era cropping up and at a good price. This is what I picked up a year ago. I think you can get for 380-420 in this area. I have the Hardy Angel 2 and it looks exactly like the Angel!! I have seen the Angel rods going on EBAY for around 1100-1200. This is kind of low. All in all I paid 1500 for mine. This, again was British. Great real the Perfect . Good luck, I will keep an eye out for you Nice evening gentlemen |
