Like many of you, I've been using and collecting fly reels for a long time. And yet, it never ceases to amaze me how many reels I acquire that appear to
have NEVER been lubricated. I'm talking about no evidence of oil or no grease being applied...EVER! It's reel...'er real...abuse.
For some reason I'm on a "run". Almost all of the reels I've purchased over the past six months have arrived "dry"---very dry. I don't know about you, but my Grandfather taught me from a very early age how to keep my guns and reels clean and lubricated. And my Dad always told me how important it is to get the oil changed in my car every 3000 miles.
But yet, I continue to run into some very collectible and fairly expensive fly reels that show little or no signs of such care. OK, maybe I'm just on another rant, but a little oil or light grease would certainly prolong the life of any simple winch (read fly reel).
No wonder many collectible reels have "spool wobble" and/or worn bearings or bushings. YIKES!

Flyman
