The Drake | #22 | ||

Mid 40's and The Drake and Eastern Fly Fishing are my two favorite magazines.
The big 3 are tired and redundant. I have not purchased one in many years. I like the Drake for its edge and multiple topics. I appreciate Eastern Fly Flishing because it fills my need to read up on fishing locations within driving distance. I recently subscribed to Fly Fishing in Saltwater because I have been bitten by the saltwater bug. Regular articles by Flip Pallot and Lefty Kreh are informative and entertaining reads. I guess each one fills a need. The new online magazines "Hatches" and "Powerfibers" are also good reads. The Drake's online forum is disgusting and a waste of time |

Greg,
I got it to. All old articles though. I hope the new owners make it. |

Just checked out the forum. It doesn't offend me but it does bore me. As far as bringing in young people, I guess I think of fly fishing as an
apprenticeship at the beginning, where you learn the techniques AND the etiquitte. Without both I hope they stick to snowboarding.
I thank you, An old fart |

I'm in my 50's and have to say I like the Drake magazine, primarily for its irreverence. Yes, it's aimed at guys who call one another dude or brah
but I can overlook that for some good writing that is not the same old "Ten Best Flies" or "New Indicator Techniques" or "The Big Horn
Is Back" stuff that the other mags waste trees on.
The Drake board on the other hand is pretty hopeless. |

The Drake is definitely a sloppy magazine that seems to cater to the "youngerns." But I find the mag's attitude refreshing. I've published in
a few of the "big" fishing mags, and their editors are terribly worried about offending anybody. And, yes, the same 10 articles seem to be published
over the cycle of each year. I'm hoping to break in by publishing "Sex, With an Indicator," and "Tip-tops: Will the Controversy
Continue?," and "Fishing Resorts for Bulimics."

I was impressed when I saw the photography and production values though, I don't know, I guess I just expected more from the writing. I do hear what some
of you are saying about the rehashing in the established zines. Though, I think they do a pretty good job of balancing articles on destinations, species, water
preservation, technique, and patterns. Also, I don't mind the marketing. It's fun to see what's new out there, and advertising is healthy for a
magazines survival. I would like to see a little more story telling like found in the old sporting journals. That sort of writing is mostly available in
anthology form now but, has been relegated to maybe one editor or staff
written column or piece in most of the periodicals. Still, after picking up
Drake a couple of times I'm left feeling that the writing, in general, doesn't quite light the match for me. Though, I applaud what they are trying to
do. Eastern Fly Fishing is pretty good, but again, I think it could benefit from some good ol' fashion story telling. Both young and old seem to appreciate
a good yarn once in awhile from what I recall.

Following up on the comment here, I checked out the Drake board. It's vile and disgraceful, predictably so. The only mystery is how some of the regulars
find time to fish, with all the time they spend there. The place has more posts than a lot of Yahoo boards.

the drake is more of a lifestyle mag rather than a straight out fishing magazine. I dont really think its for noobs, there arent many, if any "how
to" articles. just short stories and such on what we do. which is fine by me. its a quick read. and my favourite fishing mag out there, dooood!
the message board is something else. its very juvenile. but can be worth a read. also, these people fish. a lot. like all of us. it's their lifestyle. not just a twice a month hobby. although I don't really see how posting a picture of a lovely set of hooters can be considered "vile and disgraceful".

Whenever I see a new issue of The Drake on the newsstand, I buy it. It is a pretty magazine that prides itself on being hip, clever, and
irreverent, and for the most part it achieves those goals. But it is also pretty shallow - lots of glitter and artsy-fartsy elements with relatively little
substance. But I still buy it because it depicts an attitude that is important in fly fishing - the emotional attitude. While I do like the meat and potato
articles in the other mags, The Drake does give us another perspective of the sport. As far as the website forum for the mag, it's little more than a
screen for self indulgent, sophomoric wanking.
While I was reading the previous posts on this thread, I started sorting through the stack of magazines on the end table next to my chair. I have subscriptions of Fly Fisherman, Fly Rod & Reel, Trout (the TU mag), and Sport Fisherman (I have no idea where that magazine came from!). But the one I look forward to seeing on the newsstand is the Canadian publication FlyFusion - it is a beautiful, mature, well-written magazine. if you haven't read this mag, it might be worth a look-see. Yes, Flyfusion is out of Canada IIRC and the issue or two I've seen were pretty nice.
Out of the UK, "Waterlog" is nicely done but a little heavy on the coarse fishing aspects - it does have regular pieces on chalkstreams and Derbyshire streams and seatrout, but also carp, chub, pike etc. But it's well done. Some of those Italian and French (and at least one from Spain) magazines are some of the best I know of currently - being linguisticaly challenged, I am left to look at the pictures and ask my wife for interpretations. But there are pretty solid trout mags on major newstands in Paris, Milan and Madrid. |

I know it's a bit stodgy but Fly Fishing & Fly Tying out of the UK is also good. You guys are right though, I stumbled into FlyFusion a couple of
months back. It's first rate.

I'm sorry but this magazine has not shown me much yet. I hope that it will get better. I enjoy Fly Tyer sometime and Fly Fishing &Fly Tying from
England most of the time. I wish that someone would publish a magazine like Fly Fishing Heritage and The Riverkeeper again.

"I don't really see how posting a picture of a lovely set of hooters can be considered "vile and disgraceful"
Not specifically what I was referring to...more the tone of the commentary that often goes along with it. Which admittedly isn't any worse than the general run of Internet forums- like a random selection from the comment archives on YouTube, for instance. You know, doing the LCD limbo- "how low can you go?" "Let's make fun of a person with a terminal disease/wish one on someone", etc. I'm used to it, and I assure you, no one can run me off of a board, anywhere, unless they ban me. Trolls tend to avoid my presence, because I prefer to make them look stupid rather than trying to cuss them away, which is just playing their game. Anyway, worse comes to worse, I know the great arcane secret- scroll on. But after 10+ years of it, I find the whole cut-fest thing tiresome. No doubt it all looks like a righteously wide open frontier, to an 18 year old.

With skyrocketing production costs, postal rates and ultimately, subscription rates, I wonder how long the specialty magazine industry will survive. I know
I've dropped a bunch of my magazine subscriptions because they just got too expensive. I'll bet a lot of other people have done the same, especially in
this economic downturn. We've sure been reappraising our spending habits in my household.
