Been looking at a few Leonards lately. I see both Model 39s and Model 65s described as 7'6", 2/2, 3 7/8 oz., Line #5. Can someone help me understand
the differences between the two? Thanks.

Lee, there are 3 different 39's I know of the 39DF, 39L and the 39Hunt.
39 DF-5 with an uplocking mortised seat that is a do it all style rod. 39 2/2 3 5/8oz 5wt For many decades before the 1964 fire the 65 was the 7 1/2' Leonard rod. Superseded by the model 39's 65 7-1/2' 2/3 5wt @ 3 3/4oz a fine and fast DF rod with a swelled butt, cigar grip with SL wood seat and cap. 65L 3oz 4wt DF action very scarce rod. |

The 39 DF and 39 Hunt were more specialty rods. The post fire rods designated model 39 came in 39L, 39 and 39H. The L usually had an all cork reelseat and was
a slow delicate 4 WT. Some would say 3DT. The 39 was a medium 5WT that in my opnion lacked life and is best used within 30 ft and without much wind. The 39H is
a medium to medium fast 5DT. I prefer all the H rods from the 37H, 38H and the 39H.
The model 65 that I owned was identified as a very early post fire rod before the change over to the 39. It had a very stiff butt and thick tips. The rod flexed in the upper half mostly. Although it was not typical of the Leonard full flexing rods with a nice progressive action, once you got used to flinging the line (yes flinging with limited arm movement) it was a pretty accurate dry fly style rod. I sold it as it was not my favorite action and I often thought it cast better with a 6WF so not a pure 5WT. The 65L which is a lot less common than an already rare model 65 is a nicer choice in my opinion. The butt is less stiff, and the rod is a 4/5 weight. You'll a;so be the only kid on your block with one. I now own neither but cover the 7'6' Leonard with a post-fire model 49 from the Hap Mills/Simroe era. Terrific action, full flex, DF but not pure DF as in it can handle nymphing and small streamers. Also it is 3 piece so it can eventually fit into my future sports car, someday.............. |
