Here's a tactic that was new for me, maybe old hat for some of you. We are at a deserted stream near the Shenandoah Mountains in Virginia, about 1 1/2
hours from the new financial capital of the world. At first, I thought that ice would be a serious constraint on fishing -- wrong! Hope this is not
cheating.
1. Find a friendly pool that's iced over.
2. Cast your unweighted nymph, in this case a #20 pheasant tail, up stream, allowing it to sink so that the current quietly carries it under the ice.
3. Wait for a very faint strike, because that's all you'll get. Then catch fish after fish until you wonder whether you're just catching the same fish over and over.
