I am looking for a line recommendation for a W&M Granger 8642. Should I invest in a Phoenix line? What line weight?
Thanks for your insight.

Hi everyone,
I am looking for a line recommendation for a W&M Granger 8642. Should I invest in a Phoenix line? What line weight? Thanks for your insight. Andreas |

Most folks use a WF5 or DT5 on this rod, but a WF6 will work very well at shorter distances. The silk question I'm not going to touch!

I have a W&M Granger Deluxe 8642 that really comes alive with a SA XPS WF5. The line is really a WF5.5 as the XPS lines are, according to the packaging,
weighted a half size or so heavier for loading fast graphite rods. The Rio Gold WF5 also feels nice on the rod.
I also have a terenzio DT 5 that I have used once on the rod but could not get a feel for -- mostly because the line is still new and not properly broken in. |

Try both 5-weight and 6-weight lines. I find that while most of my 8642s work best as 5-weights, a couple of them seem a tad quicker and load better with DT or
WF 6 lines. Your casting style and the distance you need to reach to get to the fish will also have an impact on your line choice. I have never tried silk
lines, so I can't answer that question.

My WM Granger Special 8642 seems a little slow with a Cortland 444 DT6, and I'm keen to try it with a sharkskin WF6, just waiting for the right day! Enjoy
your rod, truly a great 8 1/2' 5/6 weight.......Mark

Try both | #5 | ||
teter wrote: I have a W&M 8642 that has a somewhat heavier tip than other 8642's I've owned (the butt and mid mike out the same). This makes the rod noticeably SLOWER than the others, and as a result it casts better with a 6-weight DT rather than a 5. So definitely try both, regardless of whether the rod seems "fast" or "slow" to you. |

Hi everyone,
I have a number of WF 6 lines including TT. I also have a DT5 Selective Trout II which I will try. I am surprised that not more people look at silk. I know the price hurts and getting the wrong line is an expensive error. Thanks, Andreas |

I fish my W&M Granger 8642 with an older Wulff TT 5/6 wt. which works very nicely long or short. I have silk lines in both 5 and 6 wt but because my gear
is geographically separated I've not yet had the chance to try either on the 8642. I'll correct that this Spring and actually hope that one of the two
silk lines works as at least as well as the TT.

I fish my WM Granger 8642 Special with either Cortland peach DT5F or Wulf TT5/6F olive (older line). I tried peach DT6F but felt it was a bit too much when
the line was out over 30'-40' (mostly lake fishing). The Favorite in the same dimention seems to be a bit softer to me (perhaps due to all the nice
intermedite wraps) and I like DT5F on it too. Hope this helps.

I have a couple of silk lines, but to be honest, I've just been too lazy to prep them and try them out. Maybe that will be one of my New Year's
resolutions, a month and a half late.

Nice rods, my favorite Granger. From a Goodwin Granger catalog I saw it's listed for HEH line which translates to a DT5. The 2 I've owned both cast
that line nice and a WF6 as well. If you can find someone near you who owns silk it would be advised to try them with your rod to decide on the right weight.
Best, Mike |

Clooze,
You are absolutely right...I got my alphabet soup of line names mixed up. The GPX lines are the heavier lines per rated line size and the same I use on the 8642. I also agree on the XPS lines falling on the lighter end of the rating scale for each size. Thanks, Grinnel |

My 8642 Goodwin Granger Special handles a DT-5-F just perfectly. It even manages a DT-4-F (mine has three tips, with one down 3" and the short tip almost
likes the DT-4-F better). But it gets a little squishy with a DT-6-F.
