A sort of Orvis graphite question? |
Lead | ||
|
The only graphite rod I have that I really like is an Orvis 7'9" Far and Fine. I am finding a need for a 8 1/2- 9 ft 4 or 5 wt graphite rod. Can any
of you suggest what Orvis rod or rod from other makers would have a similar feel/action?

Sage LL series. Long since discontinued, but they can be found out there.

Try the early/mid-era Orvis 8 1/2-foot "Henry's Fork" taper for a 5 wt. OR the Orvis HLS (High Line Speed) 8 1/2-foot for a 4 wt.
I fished the former for many years throughout the West and found it to be very nearly as nice and versatile as the 7'9" Far & Fine. If you like a little faster taper, then try the Orvis HLS which also came in a handy 4-piece model for travel. Both are truly great synthetic rods. I hope this helps! Regards, Flyman

you might try a SAGE ZXL | #3 | ||

I own a Sage LL and I believe that the current Sage ZXL casts very much like my LL...and they look the same also. Team it up with a Rio Gold line.

Without a doubt the nicest casting graphite rod I've owned is a 8ft/4wt Orvis Superfine 7/11! It feels more like a bamboo/fiberglass rod [but lighter] than
any other graphite rod I've experienced. I've owned the 7'9" Far and Fine, the Henry's Fork plus other Orvis rods & Superfines.
I've owned Scott G's and Winston IM6 and WT'S. None of them cast like a 7/11, I promise! Those other rods feel like sticks compared to the 7/11.
The 7/11 is sooo nice I bought two of them when Orvis decided to do away with the 'old' Superfines. If you can find one grab it, if you like slow rods.
Another graphite company I've read good things about are the Dorber Ultra Weave rods....which are also supposed to be very slow for graphite.

I agree with PYochim on the Winston 8 1/2ft 5 weight, but would add that the older IM6 may be more to your liking. The IM6 has a lovely, almost bamboo-like
medium to med-fast action which I personally prefer over the WT, and certainly the newer boron rods. Winston doesn't make them any more but you can
occasionally find them at a fairly reasonable rate on the used market.

My day-in, day-out go-to graphite rod has been, probably for the last 10 years or so, an Orvis TL tipflex 9 footer, 4 piece, for 5wt. I love the thing, its a
cannon, or not. Does close in just fine. I also like Orvis' PM-10 rods, long discontinued - but they seem to break on me. At any rate - don't buy it if
you haven't cast it. Mebbe I'm wrong, but buying what other people suggest (like I just did), is pretty close to the "pig in a poke"
syndrome. And, I have a good friend that can afford ANYTHING rod-wise - and owns plenty of them - and one of his fav rods is a Cabela's. Have fun!

I'd also recommend the Orvis Superfine 8.5' 5wt "Henry's Fork". Unfortunately, Orvis no longer makes this model. (You can sometimes find
one on e-bay.) I have 2 Superfine rods, they are a joy to fish.

Shameless plug ... I apologize if this isn't allowed.
Anyway, if you should decide on a Winston, I've a 904-3 WT I've been thinking of selling. It's been used once, looks brand new, and I've the original blank warranty card. The rod retails for $600.00 or so ... I'd go $450.00 plus shipping. I've a Thomas and Thomas LPS 904-3, which suits me a little better, and the Winston just does not see the water. My email is mdaley73@yahoo.com. Good Luck, Mike D. http://battenkill.tripod.com |
