Does anyone know the year the last Orvis Odyssey was manufactured?

I think about 1983-84 they went through a number of design changes. By 88-89 they had a new clutch system and pawl engagement clutch unlike any before that made them incredibly smooth. They offered to retrofit existing reels. They also changed the handles on the III & IV in 88-89 making them larger than the original. Alan

Hi Guys, I sold one to Jim Fergus the author from my Orvis shop in about 2000. They had to have been in the catalog. Some one else will have a definitive
date but I should have a set of catalogs to determine when they disappeared. I'll stay tuned. They're great reels. I have a IV. I have never
learned for sure who made them. Jay Edwards

It's too bad they're no longer manufactured. IMHO the Odyssey I is probably one of the best trout reels ever made. I have to admit to owning five of
them, two of which have never left their respective boxes.

Hi Guys, I'm not sure when the Odyssey was introduced. A 1995 catalog has them @ $415 for a III. A 1997 $460 for a III. A 2002 @ $275 for a III. [It
was 'Tarpon technology on the trout stream' in '95 and 'classic design' and a lot less$$$ in2002.] 2003? Gone....Great reels ... Jay

Yeah, I am sort of an Odyssey fanatic. I have sold/selling all of my other reels and
currently own 12 Odyssey fly reels from the type I to the type IV. IMO I think they are the prettiest reels out
there. They have a kind of art deco look to them; classic looking, yet modern.
I also like them because they are the only reels that fit all of my bamboo rods, including some very hard to fit plastic reel seats on my Edward's
quadrates.

Here's a link that might interest you.
http://www.theflyfishingforum.com/forums/f18/orvis-odyssey-worth-2nd-look-761.html I have two III and love them. One has seen a lot of work and the other is almost pristine with an unused spool. Absolutely the best fly reels for Salmon and Steelhead I have ever used. Anybody have a I they want to move? |
