Brian: agreed. A mix of Gaudi and early Picasso. Quite musical as well.

Pat, looks like you & your photographer will have to travel to the UK to document Colin's reels!
May have to search your luggage on the way home, though..... Colin, which of those 'innards' belongs to the counterweight reel? Do you have any idea of the age progression of the mechanisms? It's really fascinating to see evolution in action. Stuart |

Stuart,
No plans, unfortunately to cross the pond to shoot these beauties. But I'm beginning to conclude that Dingley made numerous variations of the Rolo/Silex reel, and that the concept was his masterpiece. The changes seem almost obsessive. They weren't small tweaks, but huge leaps and changes that, at this date, seem unnecessary. I'm yet to handle one of these variations that doesn't work extremely well. There's no obvious rationale for the immense shifts in the gearing that he was making. It's almost as if he kept sitting up in bed & shouting, "Yes!" to a continuing cascade of ideas. So... the Rolo/Silex variations seem almost a complete chapter unto themselves, even a complete book... My opinion is that the Perfect clones were, well clones, and the Uniqua look-alikes sold reels, and the St George variations sold reels, but the Rolo/Silex reels were the difference between a quartet and a full orchestra. One was necessity--business, if you like--and the other was an obsession, a passion. How else to put it? The Rolos are simply standalone masterpieces. The Dingley Perfects on the other hand are masterful. There's a huge difference. |

wonderfull
no one can dare say that these are not work of a master reel builder , i love'm all , i think the nicest to me is the check on the pat's reel , i'm still kicking myself in the #%$^ as i had a chance to pick up one of his smaller rolo/silex in 3 inch about 4 years ago , i have never seen another in that size , you'll see the odd 3 1/4 size show up every now and then , anyone else ever see his 3 inch size reel

As a very "recent" convert to Dingley's........thanks to Rich and Pat and a few others,........and that Rolo is the most stunning thing I have
seen.......I hope the "Communicable Disease Center" dosen't get wind of the "Dreaded Dingley Disease" you all have spread
around.........now I will have to sell off a bunch of my San Miguel's to finance the current Dingley addiction.........you guys are a wonderful bunch of
"purchasing mentors"......and I love it!........thanks to all....steve

Excellent photographs of wonderful reels. Interesting to see the use of a gunsmiths-type spring. Very clever work.
At the time he made this where was he living in Alnwick, his address? Near Green Batt?

The 1926 Westley Richards catalogue has the Rolo reel in it. I once owned a Rolo with spare spool that fitted in a leather case, absolute mint, unused and stunning, traded it for a Slater reel in the end. |

I picked this one up 3 years ago. It won the 1917 World's Fair long distance casting championship. Spins forever.

The Rolo version. Note the two roller balls. This was the Dingley patented reel w/ the tuning fork tensioner. Nice one! What's the diameter?

stefanduma wrote:Stefan, I guess the two spool Rolo in the case you had was a Westley Richards - if so it was called the Waud Medel Rolo - I'll post scans from the catalogue in a new post - it'll get the "D" fans all excited! Cheers Colin |

Hi Colin it was indeed bought it off BJ many years ago. I did an article in the ATO a few years ago and when the website is back up on Sunday will post the
article with the scans of the reel.
Some people might be wetting themselves once they see it. Stef |
