I'm wanting to tye up some of these for Troutfest coming up in May in the Smokies. Has anyone on our forum tyed this pattern? I've read on another
forum about it and it seems that there
are different ideas on what materials are used to tye it. Thanks, Barry. |

On page 224 of "Southeastern Flies" by L.J. DeCuir there is the pattern.
hook,9672 or sub. 4-10 thread, black weight, lead wire tail, barbules from the wing feather of a Black Bird palmered rib, split wing feather of a Black bird body, Peacock herl Note; the tying of this fly is the same as tying for the Yallarhmmer. |

Thanks narcodog, that's another set of materials that I've never seen. The main one I've liked so far is a black hare' ear body/ rib and
tan-tipped Starling feather tyed in a Stewart spider
style. Barry. |

IMO since this is a Southern fly that the materials used would be natural materials. The folks back then would not have had the money for man made or imported
such as Hares ear. Not it could be tied in the Stewart fashion as most of the settlers to the Smokies were Irish and Scottish emigrants.

Narcodog, I guess that they could have dyed a hare's mask black. I'm with you, I doubt if they even had access to man made or imported material.
Barry.

I am sure hares ear was quite available for this pattern and may have been variation of this regional pattern. I've also set out to tie some of the more
unusual patterns such as the yallerhammer, at least via the internet it is variation after variation? I'd try to refer to whatever reference you can find
and then go with that, the web versions aren't reliable in most cases.

Hugh Hartsell of Smoky Mountain Flyfishing Guides uses black hare's mask and starling feathers and he swears by this fly.

I would also say that I doubt they had Hares ear or fur, but probably dyed rabbit for the fly.
