Have to say that's one of the strangest arbors I've ever seen. Such an odd concept. Sure would not want to leave my silk line wound around that cork
after a long day on the river. Hmm.

Sorry to be a nag - great reel, but I don't believe it's born with that arbor !

Hey Pat, I wouldn't want to leave my wet silk line left wound around anything at the end of day! It looks like it had backing wound around the arbor. I
doubt there is anyway to tell if it came that way from factory, but this is not the first early perfect I have seen with such an arbor....

Hey fellow fishermen, Troutist has been nice enough to post us the pictures, I don't think he wanted an evaluation as he didn't ask for this. Positive
comments are always welcome, negative ones best said before a purchase, so the buyer can reevaluate. There is no benefit to him, at this point, to receive any
negative feed-back other than to taking the wind from his sails. If you really need to be honest to anyone, after the sale, just use your PM. Though we all
benefit from all feed-back, the post buyer pays for it in more ways than one.
Being honest, Gary PS. And I didn't make a negative comment about the cork. |

Hey Gary,
I've just re-read every comment and see nothing that I would consider particularly negative. Other than a couple raves, Chris commented about the tensioner. I noted that the cork arbor would not be silk line-friendly and Reeldane questioned whether the reel came from Hardy that way. All valid comments, and none that seem to be anything more than passing observations. I think the fact that the reel is alternately spectacular and strange is fine. That's part of what is so wonderful about our obsession--constant surprises. And let's get real--odd concepts don't negate that fact that it's a knockout Perfect. Right? Pat |

In the mid 1980es I met casting instructor Ian Blagburn, who was with Hardy for many, many years.
He showed me a couple of reels with cork arbors, that he had been using for competition casting. This reduced weight, and, as he put it, no need for much backing. I understood this was standard factory modification on reels intended for competition casting. |

Hey Pat, I understand you points and I see my interpretation was "someone is getting their reel bashed", as long as people do get the right
impression and the owner is on-board (as it seems from the previous thread), all well.

Hey folks,
No offense to anything that was said. I think this is a great forum and nearly fall off my chair laughing when everyone gets bantering with each other. I just wish Rich would 'fess up' to wearing that pink tu-tu. Hey, come out of the closet, my friend. Hey, you already did about Hardy's!! Paul |

That's the nicest Special Perfect I have ever seen. I have seen the cork on other early Hardy's and even some St. Georges (usually 3 3/8") up to the 30s. I personally think it may have been a request that a customer could make from the retailer that you could add on at any time that you want. I don't think that it would hurt the aluminum or deteriorate it any more that leaving a silk line on it that was wet. I see a heck of a lot more old Hardy's that come with a dry rotted old silk line that has never been taken off of the reel than you do these cork arbors. Its a neat addition to a reel and really makes sense if know that you are not going after huge fish you can take up that space without putting on a bunch of backing. Awesome reel Paul. Tim Zietak |

When I bought this Hardy Perfect 2 7/8" transition reel circa 1922 6 years ago it had a cork arbor. I would like to take a picture of it now but I
don't feel like removing the line and backing currently on it. Thanks for bringing this uniqness to light. When I bought it and saw the cork I didn't
know what to think now I do.
Dennis Here's a pic of the reel soon after I bought it.
