I am seeking opinions on the rod action of Phillipson 8ft 4 1/4 oz, Pacemaker, Power Pakt, etc. I've seen listings as medium fast,and medium. All opinions
appreciated.
Thanks Hap |

Phillipson 8' 4 1/4oz. Pacemaker | #1 | ||

Action is subjective but I would say "medium fast". My Phillipson has the exact same tip diameter as my Granger 8040. The Phillipson is .005"
thicker at the butt just above the winding check wrap. I would not be able to tell them apart if I was casting them blindfolded.

IMHO a W&M or Granger 8040 is more of a medium action as compared to medium-fast action 7633 or 7030 Granger. It's subjective.

We may all have different views based on the age and use (and overuse) of the rods that wound up in our hands. For me, the WM Granger 8040 had a bit more of
the "parabolic" feel of say a Pickard 795, while the 8' Phillipson Pacemaker had a more even, progressive character and maybe I'd say it was
on the medium side of medium-fast. I had a Goodwin Granger 8040 that I think was all used up and felt "noodley" to me.

Rod Action. | #4 | ||

Matt, Firehole and glassorcane,
I should have realized rod action is subjective, one mans medium is anothers medium fast. I probably should have asked how you would compare the action of the Phillipson 8ft 4 1/4 oz rod to the action of a W&M Granger or Granger 8040. As Bill Phillipson had a hand in the manufacture of all three rods, I thought the action would similar. I own and fish a W&M Granger 8040, to me the action is a medium. Thanks Hap

AS far as I can tell the 8' version VS the 8.5' version is a bit faster. Not sure how the dimensions measure up, but have owned both I prefer the
8'.
Slightly faster and for me a bit more user friendly as the day wears on you. Pete

The Phillipson rods are Slow end of medium with a 264 rise. The rod taper is lighter than the Granger 8' Favorite.

I have two 8040s, both Wright & McGill, and an 8-foot Pacemaker. I consider them all medium action, but the Pacemaker is slightly slower.

Thanks Guys, and Pete my mind still thinks its 18, but my 59 year old body says
otherwise. So user friendly is a good thing. |
