Similar but basic question to Creakycane's entomology inquiry |

Just new to fly fishing. Is there a introductory book regarding entomology and just entomology that takes the reader from very basic to a deeper
understanding. I am reading Ray Bergman's Trout and he assumes a basic knowledge of all the various naturals and their various forms. I've read the
Orvis introduction to fly fishing, Heck's Spring Creek Strategies and bought Sweibert's Nymphs I/II but think it might be too advanced. It doesn't
have to be written in the modern period as I do enjoy Bergman's style and description when there was less intrusion of the Modern world than there is now.

I'd consider Schwiebert's Matching the Hatch, Caucci & Nastasi's Hatches II or Swisher & Richards Selective Trout. These are the books I use as
references most often for mayflies. For caddisflies, LaFontaine's Caddisflies or Solomon & Leisers
The Caddis And The Angler are good.

In addition to the classic titles listed by EP some other resources in the study of angling entomology include:
"Caddis Super Hatches- Hatch Guide for the United States"- Richards & Braendle
"Mayflies, The Angler And The Trout"- Fred Arbona
"Mayflies, An Angler Study of Trout Ephemeroptera"- Malcolm Knopp & Robert Cormier
"Mayflies" - Ted Fauceglia (for its wonderful macro color photographs)
"Stoneflies"- Carl Richards, Doug Swisher & Fred Arbona
"Stoneflies for the angler"- Eric Leiser & Robert Boyle
"Aquatic Entomology"- Patrick W. McCafferty (wonderful watercolors of specimens)
"Introduction to the Aquatic Insects of North America"- R.W. Merritt & K.W. Cummins (college text for entomologists)
All are excellent readings for the aspiring angling entomologist. The bottom two titles are the most academic of the list in material presentation. |

Also, Charles E. Brooks' Nymph Fishing for Larger Trout has some great info on insect behavior.

Dave Whitlock's Guide to Aquatic Trout Food. This is a very basic book - easy to understand - a great introduction. It takes you through the
life cycles of each of the major insects - Mayflies, Caddis, Stone flies, Midges. It also talks about Sow Bugs and a few others. Its also readily available.
