Pike are a Different Kettle of Fish | #41 | ||
|
Boo just isn't the best tool for Northern Pike. Six to eight inch bunny strip streamers flies with 18 inches of 49 strand stainless steel leader at the
end of 5 ft. of 21 lb. Maxima just makes casting cane a chore, not a dream. For this I have a Powell Tiboron XL 9', 4 pc., 9 wt. It works great for big
Canadian Northern Pike (it also works in a pinch for brook trout up to 24 inches in the heavy waters of Manitoba's God's River). Just imagine what a
bamboo rod would look like after a day of pike fishing (like that shown below), when upwards of 100 fish are landed.

I was just thinking about that...I love fishing with my old Wonderod paired with either the Rimfly or the Crown II...let me tell you, I get some really weird looks out on the river, especially since people can hear the reel sing from a ways away. That's actually my second favorite setup to fish... |

I also have a selection of graph's that are very nice rods and I like 'em a lot. For trout they go the Sage SPL 1,2 and 3wt route along w/a 3wt SP.
Excellent rods. I "used" to fish them all the time. I'd still like them, I just don't use them but they'll not be sold.
For pike and muskies it's a choice of Loomis 6 to 10 wts in the IMX /GL3 line or a Sage xi2. Good stuff for toothy critters. It's graphites in the boat.
No muskie pics as I fish solo there and they're a bugger to handle/photograph alone. Best on a fly goes 43inches on an 8wt. She tailwalked 3 times and was one of the best fights of my life! I'd best quit now....

Scott F703/3 - 7' 3 wt. glass - excellent, indestructible small stream rod.
Scott SES 9' 5 wt.. - excellent drift boat rod. Scott E2 9' 6 wt.. - another excellent drift boat rod. Scott A2 10' 7 wt. - for steelhead when it's cold enough for guides to ice. Scott A2 9' 8 wt. - got for a backup rod for Alaska which I never used. Turned out to be a good smallie rod. Yeah, I like Scott rods. Powell AXS 9' 9 wt. - for stripers. It casts well enough and was cheap. I sometimes get sad about selling the Sage LL 9' 4 wt. although I can't say I've ever wished I had it on the water with me at the time. I'd like to get a 4 piece glass rod I can take anywhere, anytime I want and not have to worry about damage or loss. |

I also like a softer 10 ft graphite rod for traditional soft hackle and Czech nymph fishing. I like a long rod to mend the line through pocket water with wets
and the reach helps for Czech nymphing. I have old 9 1/2' to 10 1/2' cane wet fly rods from FE Thomas (great action, but heavy), Heddon (probably the
best long cane rod I have), Pritchard (most noodly cane rod I have ever handled), Chubb, T&E?(Empire City - not a bad one). At 10 feet a cane rod is
either a noodle or too heavy, so I like my 10' graphite rods. I fish the old guys for historical interest, but graphite is more pleasant to fish at
10'.

Hey guys, sorry I've got to back up here. Been away a couple of weeks. Thanks for that input on the TiBoron XL. I have one that I've fished a couple of
times for bass but nothing quite like that trophy pic! My rod was a replacement for a TiMax that broke at the ferrule and Powell made good on by giving me an
upgrade. I can't say if it was the rod, who knows, I made have nicked the scrim with a hair bug on an earlier backcast or not have had the tip fully
seated, but Powell made good on their warrenty. So far, no problems with the TiBoron XL. It certainly has more backbone for casting into the wind than the
TiMax did. I'm glad to see that whopper at the end of the line in case I make it to Manitoba, or find the elusive long toothes known to lurk in some parts
of the Concord here in Mass.

Check out this video http://www.gunnisongorgeanglers.org/flyfishing_videos/Jeff_Hatton/15/33/Pike_on_a_2_wt_bamboo.html
The rod is not bamboo!!!!!!! Gale has still not put the right title to it. The rod is a SCOTT G 802 this fish was caught on a #2 white bendback. That pattern is large 6"' to 8" and is very aerodynamic after 1 false cast and it also weighs almost nothing; and when tied properly with kevlar and superglue it is almost indestructible. I have bendbacks that have caught pike year after year for 10 plus years and the bugs are still going strong. It is also my favorite big fish fly for most species. The shock tippet used was 20" of 30# hard mono shock tippet material from climax and a 6' 0X leader. And I have landed 5 pike in excess of 40" on that rod and I do not know how many in the 30" to 40" range it has landed but it is well in excess of 100 fish. That is as close to tarpon fishing as I can get here in Colorado. Jeff |

Nice topic.
I use one of three, most often in unfamiliar water or brushbusting and none are particularly fancy. A yellow glass Fenwick FL84 from the 70's An Orvis Clearwater 7'9", 5 wt Or a St. Croix, Avid, 9', 4 wt Dave |

I just finished out a McFarland 8'6", 4/5 wt., 3-piece fiberglass blank that I cannot wait to fish. This thing casts great. I've been adding a few
fiberglass rods to my stable. I do not have any graphite and won't as its why I came to fish cane in the first place. All the graphite I tried (could
afford) was too stiff or just didn't give me enough feedback during the cast. I started getting interested in glass as an alternative to cane for those
specialty heavier rods for bass or light saltwater and liked them so much I decided to get a couple for trout fishing too. I still love to fish cane, but
I've branched out a little to fiberglass.

Graphite and Glass | #51 | ||

I own and fish several bamboo rods including my 4wt Eustis Edwards rod. When it comes to Drift boat fishing or lakes I prefer Graphite.
Last year using a Sage Z-Azis rod I caught and released a 30.25 inch 10 plus pound Cutthroat trout, size 14 pt flashback nymph. Next I visit the same body of water I will have my Winston 9.5 8wt MX 8wt tossing streamers. For midge fishing will have my 9' 6wt Sage SLT rigged with a floating line and 4x tippet fishing in 9-10 feet of water from my pontoon boat. Last Aprils fish... also caught earlier same day an 8 pound 28.5 inch female, also released. ![]()
For smaller water and fish I enjoy using a Phillipson 6' Master Glass, Sage LL Series 9' 4wt and 7'11" 4wt, Winston IM6 8.5 5wt, Powell 7' 4-5wt.... and a few others

I have 2 multi-section mid weight graphite rods (one is 6 pieces and the other 7 pieces) that will fit in a briefcase and can go anywhere. I am not overly fond of either one but they do let me fish at times when carting a 2 or 3 piece cane rod about simply is not an option. |

Ok I have one now. . . . I was at our FF club installation dinner last night, I won a graphite rod. So now I own one and its quite interesting. Its an
11'-0" 5WT. I took it out back today and it tossed the whole fly line with ease. I'm not sure what to do with it. At the beach maybe or It may be
useful in the belly boat. I don't think it bends enough to net a fish while sitting down. I may get one of the 120' snakeskins lines and hit the flats
with it.
