I'm going to replace my PVC drip tube with a metal one (easier to keep the varnish warm, etc.). Is there any reason to not use iron pipe? Or do I need to
bite the bullet and get copper? Any other suggestions/reasons?

I once made one out of copper, and after about 3 months the varnish went green!

properly made a galvanized iron dip tube will allow you to use the varnish for several years at a time

Thank you both.
You not only told me what I needed to know but what I wanted to hear. I guess I'll be looking at plumbing supplies. |

Ah...Horsesho, I had Spar in my copper tube. Some chemical reaction to make verdigris? Now I just use plastic.

I use a section of intermediate metal conduit (IMC) a small fraction of the price of iron
. It will not handle 6oopsi like plumbing but that is OK.
The bottom is plugged w/ a wooden dowel epoxied in place. For the top I fitted a 4 hole flange to the threaded end of the IMC and I cap this with a 1/4 inch
thick piece of aluminum bolted through to the flange. A gasket is placed in between.
