Brookie Fishing in Canada |
Lead | ||
|
Been dreaming about a trip to Canada for Brookies. I have all the information on Minipi Camps and Three Rivers camps and they sound wonderful but unfortunately
they are of out my price range. Can anyone recommend a more low end rustic camp setting up in Canada where you can fish mainly streams. The lake fishing on
Minipi is not all that interesting for me. Really want to be wading streams. The brookies do not have to be the monsters that they take in the super camps.
Fancy lodges are not my thing. Any camp suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It has been a long difficult year at my work and looking for a nice escape.
Thanks Bob |

What part of Canada do you have in mind? There are some great out-of-the-way places in Northern Ontario or Quebec full of eager, non-sea run natives up to
20 inches +. Also some good opportunities for sea run whoppers in New Brunswick and PEI. I can tell you about Northern Quebec, just drop me a PM via Yuku.
For the Maritimes I'll bet Bow River can point you to some good spots in NB as can I. You should also contact Hardy Guy on this forum. He guides PEI and
elsewhere in the Maritimes, and has shown pics here of some gorgeous big brookies.

Northern Ontario has several lakes and fly-in outfitters with brook trout lakes and for river fishing the Sutton would be hard to beat . Or coasters in the
Nipigon .
If anyone knows of any cheap alternatives to Minipi where the fish are comparable I'm all ears though .. |

I've fished in Labrador for 5 years straight and as far as I'm concerned there is no better place for brookies. The English river is great.

Manitoba is God's Country for Brookies | #7

While the Minipi is more well known, the God's River in Manitoba is every bit its equal, and is much easier to get to from most of the U.S. (a simple flight to Winnipeg and the lodges then take you to God's Lake). There are other options also (e.g. Island Lake, North Knife Lake). None of the lodges in this area are cheap (they are all fly-in), but they are generally cheaper than Labrador. And above are pictures of what you can expect. I had 12 brook trout over 20" in three days of fishing the God's River (the other 4 days of a week trip were spent northern pike and walleye fishing - my buddy is a pike on the fly kind of guy). |

I've wanted to fish Labrador for those big brookies for years and I'd wet my waders if I caught something that big. but while big rainbows are just as
beautiful as smaller ones, big brookies can't compare in beauty to their small stream brethren IMHO.

no, look at the size of his elbow compared to his head, and consider that his elbow is halfway between the fish and his head.
It's just a Very Short focal length lens, probably 14mm to 18mm. And certainly bought just for this purpose.
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

Gods Lake Again | #15 | ||
|
It's true, I was clearly blessed on that trip. So much so that I want a second blessing of the same type. We're heading back up to Gods Lake again
this summer, this time to focus on the Kanuchuan River, which is the major inflow stream to Gods Lake, located at the southern end of the lake. God's
River is at the northern end of the lake and is the only outflow to a 1200 square mile lake. We also plan to spend a day or two on God's River as part of
a ten day adventure. Half of the days will be for northern pike on the fly. I'll post more photos when I get back. To whomever said that large brookies
are not as beautiful as small ones, not true! If anything, their colors get more vibrant as they get to 20" and over. Each spot is more distinct and
develops more contrast with the background body color.

Good luck to you my friend, is it a streamer affair, or are there some dries mixed in? Please tell me mice are on the menu, I would actually be able to have a
smile in the box if I were you and it was a mouse affair!

Dries: Caddis, Stoneflies, Mayflies, and Rodents | #17
|
You bet - mice flies are included, and not just for the brook trout, but also for the northern pike. It is really hard to describe the take of a pike on a
mouse fly. There is no brown trout in Montana that can reproduce the ferocity of an attack of a big northern on a mouse fly. It really is quite like a
"Jaws" experience. But it is also a treat to take 20"+ brookies on dry flies in big water. Half of the Master Angler (20" and over) brook
trout I caught last year were on dries, including mayfly, caddis, and stonefly imitations. My buddy had the honor of taking a brookie on a mouse. There's
still something left for me to live for.
