Kermit,
The reason is KNOTS, They hang in the loose rings. Now on the other hand if you have a knotless line and leader system they would be absolutely applicable today. I have a small creek rod that is a staggered 4 strip purpleheart butt with a 6 strip tonkin cane tip and the rod is wrapped out with hanging rings and when you are into pure flyline you would be amazed at how well they cast. That little rod is capable of casting much farther than I would ever fish it. The people who have casted it in the last few years have been blown away by how well it cast and it will shoot line like a mad dog. The rod is also spliced and originally had a #12 ferrule but I broke it at the ferrule on the football field when attempting to throw a whole triangle taper 4 wt with it. andf if it had not failed at the ferrule station in the purpleheart I would have thrown the whole line and some backing on that cast. That lead to it being a scarfed joint rod ;-) I am going to challenge you to get an old Chubb and build it out with HR guides and fish it. You will be surprised at how well they function with the one caveat of the knots. Jeff |

kermit.... Are you making your rings? If so, how are you making them? I was considering using them on one of my rods, but had not come up with a satisfactory
way to generate consistent rings...are these soldered or from sections of drilled bar stock or??
