Clark's forum has only limited control over ad types, so if ads began to appear, they could be for anything from kid's clothing to weight loss come-ons
(and anything you might imagine in-between).
Every donation buys a certain number of ad-free views, depending on the size of the donation. Pat

Thanks for the reminder. This community is too valuable to let it be messed-around-with.

Maybe we should think about an announcement every 90-120 days to keep the board free. Gregg |

I am stepping down as the owner of the Classic Fly Rod Forum. I have offered ownership to another who has given much to this site and hope to hear their decision shortly. In any event I would like to extend my gratitude to the membership and Moderators for their contributions during the past 4 years it has been appreciated. Regards...... The Community Chest is open for the next 72 hours for donations, Yuku differs from EZBoard in how donations are utilized we used to pay for ad free community which was across the board in EZBoard and the early iteration of Yuku but the latest is that Yuku assigns this by membership contributions, I will turn off the donate link when 10 million ad free views have been accumulated, it is currently just under 5 million now, thanks to all who have donated........ I'm perplexed why people choose this type of forum operating system. It's a money generator for who? There are choices in forum programs that allow a lot of great features and the program is free and well supported! There is a internet full of "unlimited bandwidth ~ unlimited storage" for less than $20 per month. If you pay by the year it is cheaper. Add in domain name registration of about $10 to $30 per year and well, the operating cost for a year is less than the price of a good used Hardy reel, for the year. Split it up and the cost disolves or you could take the income and donate it to save an old growth forest or give the money to a non-profit that benefit's your choice of charity or a green cause. Maybe a group can be formed that has experience in different areas of running and maintaining a forum based site. A group that could grow the community and promote ecology and diversity while maintaining a primary focus based on a mission statement that was decided on by the forum members. I pay the fees above for the grassart community and if we grow large enough, I would move the site towards the mission statement as well. I would like to see that happen here and if I didn't already pay for my community site costs, I would make a donation to this one if it promoted the mission statement and not Yuku. This is what Yuku says it is: http://help.yuku.com/help20/index.php/About_yuku Just a thought. This forum began as Clark's Classic Bamboo Rod Forum, founded by Clark Davis for all who share a passion for classic rods. To all, welcome to our Yuku Board, and tight lines. - banjo.

Adam,
I run the Fiberglass Flyrodders, another Yuku fly fishing discussion forum. I like the Yuku system because it helps me run my forum in the limited time I have available. Running a discussion forum like Clark's is a big investment of personal time. Running Clark's as a do it yourself sys-op is a huge time and training commitment. Running Clark's as a DIY sys-op with direct links to multiple similar forums would entail quitting the day job. Certainly you could set up Clark's on a shared hosting system. But Clark's averages over a million page views per month! Running Clark's at the accustomed performance and speed needs more horsepower than a bargain host can provide. Wander over to The Admin Zone and read some of the horror stories about over subscribed shared hosts. Unfortunately, we get what we pay for. At Yuku, the forum admins manage the forum content. Like the Clark's admins, my expertise is fishing, not phpBB, vBulletin, or MySQL. Yuku runs the servers and the software. They update the security and backup the files. I gladly pay them a premium for their technical services. There are a lot of community benefits besides. Here's one aspect specific to the current situation on Clark's. Yuku allows a forum owner to hand the system to another owner without any disruption or relocation of the forum. That is almost impossible to choreograph with individually owned domain names and hosting services. Tom |

Hi Tom, thanks for your reply. I got started with fly fishing forums early on. One got big, really big. We did not have numbers like you describe but the problems we had were as challenging as, if not more so because we were big, back in the day with a lot less than what is available now as far as software and fast servers and end user computers, readily available cable. http://web.archive.org/web/*/www.smallstreams.com is an example, we went further back than that and there were other sites I made on fly fishing and other interests and international colaberations as well. You have to imagine it, then make it happen. I am not a programmer, just a little guy with a apple making it happen. You can make it as simple or as complex as you want but I would not have posted what I have if I didn't know what I was writing about. Anyway, good luck.

I've been around on several internet forums, and I'm not a member here for long yet, but this one is the first I felt the need and obligation to make a
(albeit small) donation to. So I did.

OK guys, I've read what Adam and Tom put up, were those posts in english? Being an old fart and new to computers I think, "if it aint broke" lets
not try to fix it. Every time something changes in the way I need to use this computer I have to get out the owners manual and I have to tell you its a bit dog
eared at this point.

Change is inevitable, it's about to happen here. The architecture I am referencing is more simple than this one. I've always built sites based on the
slowest, non-computer literate person that was going to visit. This is a plastic rod compared to the bamboo one I am referencing. There are those who make
sites and those who buy and sell them. I make web sites on fly fishing, have been since early on. That said, I am not offering to donate, I do that by visiting
and offering information (this web site is NOTHING without your participation) not offering to do anything but give a few honest words in what I would do, my
perspective. I do hope it continues in one form or another as I want to see bamboo move into the future. That's enough from me.

I predict that the Forum is not going anywhere, and that any changes in the future will be for the good. This site is all about sharing information. Our
members have diverse & rich experiences, as well as a willingness to pass along the most arcane details, advice, photos, contact info, recipes (both
cooking & rodmaking) & memories. Banjo steps aside with the Forum in great shape--his groundwork has been critical, & his stewardship laudable.
I'd avoid prognostications about dire changes. It's not going to happen.
