It's nice to see this much support for the Regal, which I think is a truly superior design. Typically, when the vise topic comes up on other boards there
seems to be a large number of folks complaining about Regals shooting hooks across the room and jaws chipping and problems with warranty claims with the
primary advocacy going to various "true rotary" designs.

Flyman,
But the Xuron--well, it's got karma galore!Couldn't agree more! ...and it's got a helluva pedigree going for it. ...and it's a great vise that not many people have ...and it's a vise that...just works ...and it's neck has a "sexy" curve that no of the other modern vises have....... hey, what are we talking about here.... Bottom line, unless I'm tying on my trusty Dyna-King Supreme, I'm tying on my Xuron ...you know, the vise with the phunny name that nobody has heard about but everyone has seen in the fly tying books for 50 years. ...and "if" they show up on eBay as a Darbee vise go for BIG bucks. I know. I passed up on one a few years ago and I've been kicking myself ever since..,but the new Xuron version puts a smile on myface just looking t it......

Do give the Nor-vise a careful look before leaping. My tying has evolved through about 15 years, and after using almost all of the vises named, I have settled
on the Nor-vise. It's an elegant & utterly simple invention. Look it over before spending your cash on an equally expensive alternative.

Still tying on a Price Vise from the 70's.
Had to part off the the collet tube & replace with hard tool steel matching back side of jaws. Just recently, jaws have opened a bit out of parallel, but I'll get ambitious & hammer them back into alignment. FWIW, a mchine company out in Idaho has brought the Price back out: http://www.nnmachine.com/5643.html no involvement, etc..... |

I just bought a Thomas Vise to carry with me when I travel. The finish is not as pretty as the new vises but the simplicity and workmanship is very nice. Why
did I buy it, it has character.

Tied on both a Regal and traveler for a great many years. Use them for traveling only. For the last three years I've use a Nor-vise with fine point
conversion jaws and tube kit. Do a lot of demo tying and specialty flies and I find it vastly superior. It has also narrowed down my need for special tools
like dubbing twister. I tie everything from standard trout dries an wets to full dress Atlantic and Steelhead flies. Love not only the vice and auto bobbins
but the incredible service by the company owner.
Often I have been exhausted on trout streams, uncomfortable, wet, cold, briar scarred, sunburned,
mosquito bitten, but never, with a fly rod in my hand have I been in a place that was less than beautiful.

I wouldn't own another DynaKing. Mine never held hooks real well but it was my first vise and I didn't know any better. I thought since everyone talked
about how good they were the others must really be bad. I bought a cheap vise o use until I could get the DK fixed and was shocked and how rock solid the jaws
were. They blew the DK away big time. I contacted DK about my Jaws since the vise was only a year old. I discovered the "life time warranty"
dosen't apply to the jaws. They have a two year waaranty. Even though my vise was only a year old DK still wanted to charge me to "refresh" the
jaws. Under warranty???
I've review several pictures posted on line of DK jaws with flies in them. They appear to have the same issue mine has. The jaws are two soft and deform. The teeth flatten out and then the jaws will not hold anything smaller than a bass hook. They do hold big hooks okay due the the large grooves cut in the jaws. The prevent the hook from moving most of the time. My DK will not hold anything smaller than a #4 hook. I just put in the the box and threw it in the closet. I'm going to use my cheap vise until I figure out what I want to buy. |

Spiaailtli,
I've have probably tied over two thousand flies on my Dyna-King supreme and have never had a problem holding a small, medium or large hook. You do have to adjust the nurling nut properly though to get a tight hold. |

Trust me, I've tried adjusting it six ways from Sunday. In the begining it would hold hooks "better", but now not at all. Mine has way more than
2000 hooks through it too.
The fact you can see photos of other deformed jaws, others complaining of the same issue, jaws excluded from warranty, and a jaw refurbish program tells me they know it's an issue. My cheap vise simply puts DK to shame. I've even put 24's in it and they just don't budge at all. |

Been tying on Dyna Kings for years. Hook slippage and jaw deformity not an issue at all. I could go through a list of other vises that I owned that did have
said issue, but decorum prohibits.

Returned from the NW Fly Tyer Expo in Oregon. I'd say most tyers used Nor-Vise, Dyna-King, Renzetti and a few HMH. Nor-Vise does require some learning
and/or adjustment but professionals like them. I saw no Peak vise but there were a hundred tyers and I didn't see them all. I'd like to get a
Dyna-king.

I Have also just returned from the Northwest Fly Tyers Expo and have used my Dyna King Barracuda on thousands of flies of all sizes with zero problems. Been
tying for 54 of my 61 years on every vise imaginable, except the Nor vise which I would like to try someday, All the guys in my shop have Dyna Kings and years
of experience and love them. No customer returns yet. I like the Regals, and did own one, but have had several "slips and chips" from my customers,
who I am sure are not all immature klutz's. They were all repaired or replaced but usually returned with a somewhat grumpy letter about improper use. I
suspect anything that allows a hook to slip on enough occasions that it is not an uncommon occurence is a problem that needs addressed.

Spiaailtli,
Can't recall if you mentioned sending it back to Dyne-King but that's exactly what I'd do and tell them your story. I sent an old one back to them for refurbishing that I bought on eBay. I basically got a brand new vise back for the worn out one I sent them. They last that long. On a side note, Mary Dette uses a Dyne-King Pro. She's been tying on that thing for years also. You might have just gotten a bad one.
Thinking about this for a minute, if they temper the jaws, which I'm sure they do, maybe these slipped through the tempering step.

I have a Dyna King Ron Abbey Signature for home and a Danvise for travel. The Dyna King is all I could ask for in a vise and the Danvise is one heck of a vise
for the money.
