Dick Cheney to be Guest Speaker at American Museum of Fly Fishing |
Lead | ||

Dick Cheney will be the guest speaker at the American Museum of Fly Fishing this spring. I guess this ties into the Presidential Series of rods the museum
has.

They are primarily a historical organization, rather than conservation, and that is a choice consisentent with that focus. |

One might argue that without proper conservation, the only place left to enjoy our great sport will be the museums. A museum devoted to a sport that arguably
requires some level of conservation ethos for its very survival ought not honor someone without a conservation bent, let alone hostility to conservation
principals.

The next post should probably be a report on Mr. C's speech. Let's let Banjo's last days as our host be peaceful ones. JHektor

Thank You Gentlemen.... and remember, Mr. Cheney didn't invite himself to this shindig... someone there may have had a good reason. Wait and see.

VP Cheney is originally from Wyoming.
He's a life long hunter and fly fisherman. He also fishes bamboo. IMO his appearance at the AMFF, of which I have been a member for over 25 years, is quite appropriate. And the event will, no doubt, be well attended. Wish I could be there. Regards, Flyman

Cheney Fly Fishing in the Tetons | #6 | ||
|
Last September when I was doing the interview tour for the Howells book I stopped by my sister's place which is south of Jackson.
When we were going into town for groceries and to stop by the hardware store she pulled over a few miles south of Jackson. She pointed out three Blackhawk helicopters to the NW in a sort of awkard sky dance. "Vice President Cheney is out fishing again," she said. JHektor |

I put a lot of after thought into the symbol chart {please note 6 revisions}.
We all know about blue & red and all that. This is not the place. It will be interesting to read the notes from someone who hears him speak. JHektor |

Sad to say the Museum's primary mission is neither conservation or historical, it is fund raising. I say this not as an indictment, but as recognition of a
sad reality. Without significant fund raising the Museum will not survive. Historically, the former president and his crowd represented real economic and
political power. If that is still true, then the Museum is wise to go for the money and endure some bad press from people who would never donate a dollar. But,
we have had an election, and a lot of the high rollers have been hurt by the economy. If things have changed then perhaps it is not such a wise decision.
In today's economy I would not want to be responsible for a small not for profit like the Museum. AgMD |

Money makes it all work. If I'm in error, please correct me.
I believe the museum maintains the Leonard-Howells rod {circa 1875}; plus much else that interests sophisticated fly fisher people, of which I am not one. It would be tough for decades long enthusiasts, and future folk, to lose such an institution. Since I simply can't attend the meet, I do look forward to what Dick Cheney has to say, hopefully as reported by a wordy member of this list. JHektor Ps: also, for anyone that wants a quick note {for private use only} on my place in the red / blue mess, please email: wctc1@comcast.net |

Gentlemen;
Let me commend you on keeping the tone quite civil and approaching the whole business objectively. I recognize that the entire subject is fraught with opportunities for innuendo and jabs... and to date you have refrained. Please keep up the good work and endeavor to use this as an example of what can be done in the future on other subjects. Thank You Very Much, A Moderator |

A wise man told me that most often it is better to keep your comments to yourself. I'm a good listener.
I'm a member of the museum and want to see it grow and be financially stable. Bringing in a high profile figure usually will draw a big crowd.

Fair disclosure-- I am a sometimes, minor member of the Museum who has the good fortune of living within a 30 minute drive from the Museum. I have been through
the exhibits many times, going back to the days when it was housed in a side room off of the Orvis sales floor. On a few occasions I was given access to some
of the materials not on display. Probably not a rare thing, but it was something I deeply appreciate. My sentiments are with the Museum. For me the question is
which course of action is in the best interest of the Museum. My feeling about a former vice president are not part of the equation, but the effect of public
opinion might affect the Museum.
