Leonard 8 ft. Catskill Line Recommendations |
Lead | ||
|
Would very much appreciate hearing line recommendations for an 8 ft. Leonard Castkill. It's a 3-piece rod with full intermediate wraps. Total weight is 2
1/4 oz. Probably made about 1920. Feels like a 3-weight.

mikec -- Thanks! What kind of reel do you use on your rod? I've tried a Hardy Baby Bougle and a small Bradley reel on my Catskill, but the reel foot is
too large. What's a nice reel with a small foot that was used on these types of rod? Or do you have to file down the foot, which I would hate to do?

I had one and a Sylk DT3 worked beautifully, but you have to be very deliberate in your casting stroke and let the rod load.

RPL:
I've found that my small Godfreys fit the old, tight Leonard seats better than any other reel. I believe this is because the feet were modeled after a Leonard Fairy reel. A 2.5" Saracione DeLuxe will also work well on some of them. Another option to filing down the foot of a reel you presently own (something I could never be satisfied with) is to have Bill Archuleta make you a smaller foot for it. (This assumes the foot is easily removable.) You can replace the new foot with the old if originality of the reel later becomes desirable. |

I don't think there is a way of knowing for sure what line weight those rods were made for. Leonard must have done a lot of custom building. I have a
prefire rod like yours (8ft 3/2) that is overloaded with a 2wt line. It handles a 1wt DT silk perfectly.
The space between the cap and spacer on my rod is unbelievably small. Of course the original Mills Fairy reel fits. A small Peerless will also fit. The foot will be thin enough, and if it is too long Bob Corsetti will make you a shorter one for $20. Another reel that fit the foot of my rod (unexpectedly) is an Islander IR 1.

rpl,
i believe it was a hardy lightweight or featherweight. i also cast quite often with the reel in my pocket, so that is a reel possibility also mike |

Thanks to all for the recommendations! I think the solution has come to me. Carefully file down the foot, as little as possible, on my smallest Vom Hofe and
try it with a DT 3 for starters. Seriously though, the idea of keeping the reel in my pocket has a lot of appeal. Makes the rod even lighter. I have on
occasion fished that way with other rods, even when the reel matches the rod. If that doesn't work, I've always wanted one of those Peerless or Godfrey
reels, and this rod may be a good justification. I've tried several very small reels like the Pflueger Progress 60 but the feet on those reels are still
too big. Funny how the reels with the smallest feet are some of the priciest.

Tim: Thanks. I'm having a hard time finding a reel that fits. When you say period Fairy, do you mean a Leonard reel? I recently bought this rod from a well
known Midwestern dealer so I don't know if this was your rod. One identifying feature is that it has a slight re-wrap of about 1/4 inch on the butt
ferrule. Familiar? Will soon have an opportunity to take this out on the water, though unfortunately not in the Catskills until the summer. These rods are very
interesting because they're so slow and light, although this one is 8 ft. long. They really have the look and feel of a miniature rod, as if they were made
for small people, which I guess is what inspired the name.

tim simbari wrote: Tim, I think I have the rod you're talking about -- restored by John Bradford (unless you had more than one). I stumbled onto an Ogden Smith Zefer that fits and balances very well, and I agree on the line. |

I forgot to mention two other reels that will just make it into that tight cap space. A small Payne and the smallest J.Austin Forbes. They are both 2 inch
reels with very limited capacity.
