Looks like there might be a family vacation in Yosemite this summer. My sister-in-law in L.A. who is looking into it asked if the Wawona
area (SW Yosemite) would be OK for me - in other words, would the fishing be OK. I haven't a clue. Are there good streams around there that you don't
have to hike a lot to get to? Any fly shops or guides near that part of the park?

The South Fork of the Merced River is a fine stream...and it runs right through the area. There are many fine feeder streams, as well. Easy access, but as with
most streams, "luck" improves exponentially the farther one gets away from it.

where is she planning on staying, a campground or the wawona hotel? the merced's south fork is ok. you'll have fun, especially if you fish upstream of
wawona. but better fishing (and bigger fish) is found on the main fork of the merced from just within yosemite valley (pohono bridge) downstream to the arch
rock (west) entrance and then again from just within the park's boundary through the town of el portal and further downstream to briceburg. some smallie
action too i hear the lower you go. the road winds along the main merced for quite a ways so it's relatively easy access but few actually fish it. it's
worth checking out though. if stationed at wawona, it's about a 60 minute drive to reach the main merced as described (35-40 mins from wawona to yosemite
valley itself), considering summer traffic . and yes, several nice feeder streams too. you can stay in el portal at the yosemite view lodge but there are few
services. for travelers, a gas station, market, restaurant. still, the main merced flows along the perimeter of the modern hotel. there's also the cedar
lodge, though i'm always hesitant to even consider staying there due to a solitary incident there a few years ago, google cary stayner.
check out charles beck's yosemite trout fishing guide, chock full of information. if you're interested in hiring a guide, contact jimmie morales: http://www.sierraflyfisher.com/ he just opened a fly shop in the town of oakhurst which is on the route to yosemite through the south entrance (from the fresno area). if you've got some time, you should drive the tioga pass road to tuolumne meadows (90 mins from the Valley?). check out the dana and lyell forks of the T upstream from tuolumne meadows. plenty of willing small to medium sized rainbows and brooks. it's a relatively easy and very pleasant FLAT walk from the dog lake parking lot along the john muir trail (20-30 mins?) crossing the dana to the lyell. many you'll see are hiking as fast as they can to make up miles and few actually fish the area which is incredibly beautiful and well worth the drive. if you were to continue on the tioga pass road beyond (east) of tuolumne meadows another 5 -10 minutes, you'll find the dana running alongside the road. pull off anywhere you can. i know of a few other places you could fish in the park between wawona and yosemite valley and if you want some company let me know. i live in fresno and consider yosemite my playground, as well as kings canyon and sequoia national parks. eric fresno, ca. |

This is off topic, but if you haven't been there, Yosemite is worth the trip for the scenery alone. My wife and I lived overseas for several years and have
traveled quite a bit. Despite the crowds, I still consider Yosemite to be among the most beautiful places on the planet.

The Wowona area is beautiful. A lot of good streams to fish in the area. They also have huge gatherings of ladybugs in the area, awsome to witness. Take the
road across the street from the hotel thru the golf course, great drive and a nice creek up there. Kicking back on the main hotel front porch with a cocktail
is nice and relaxing too. They used to have a Saturday evening BBQ by the pool during the summer, not sure if they still do. I'd ask about it. Enjoy.
Oh yeah, the smell going over the pass to the valley floor is cool, smells like artichokes.

Listen to Eric Zamora ~~ he knows the area. My favorite area in the park is way over at the other end ~~ the NE corner and the Tuloumne Meadows area and the
Tioga Pass region. Of course I have to mention the Whoa Nelli Deli at the intersection of 120 and 395 (otherwise known as the Mobil Gas Station). Get an
order of the huckleberry ribs or the lobster taquitos ~~ you can thank me later ~~ and you will.
Best Fishes... Edit ~~ My bad ~~ my favorite area is the NE corner ~~ mistake corrected...

Thanks guys. I remember Flykuni talking about the Whoa Nelli Deli in the past. Lobster taquitos? D**n, those sound tasty. The powers that be are talking
about renting a house or cabin somewhere from Wawona to the north along the western side, as yet to be determined. I have to say that it is nice that they
take my fishing as part of my vacation needs into account when planning these things.

Make sure that even if you don't fish the NE area of the park that you make a day trip through Tioga Pass (120) and the Tuloumne Meadows area. And include
a trip to the Whoa Nelli Deli ~~ you will be glad you did. Flykuni is wrong about many things (LOL) but he is right about the Deli. Absolutely amazing.
Check out the area to see if the owner on the trapeze.
