I hoped to fish with one of my 9' Grangers, but reel foot is too long. Any solutions?
Thanks, Don

I picked this reel up last fall. I was wondering if anyone could help with information. Reel works really well. I carefully cleaned an old crusted line off
using methods suggested on this forum. Didn't do anything to the finish. Left as I got it.

A relatively early WH Dingley reel. Nice.

Don - I have found that most fixed end of the reel seat will accommodate the larger reel foot but the sliding ring won't. I usually fit the reel foot
into the fixed end and use black vinyl electrical tape to tightly hold the other end (Vinyl tape will stretch quite a bit and can be wound tight after
stretching) and then tighten the screw ring up to snug it. Also have used leader material in a pinch.
Only other option is to replace either reel seat or reel foot. Also I have your reels older brother when they used to reside at 45 Jermyn St.

Thanks for the helpful information. I will try something temporary and harmless first. Then I might try to put a smaller foot on the reel and save the original
foot. I forgot to put a picture of the bottom of the foot. It is a two screw version.
Anyway, thanks again. Don |

Paul,
That's a nice reel. I like the graphite finishes. What size is your reel? Don |

Don, I would measure the distance between the foot screws at dead cente(DC), request a later possible Ernest Dingley 3 1/2 with same measurements, in the
classifieds here. You have the three days to evaluate the fit and you may end up with a reel plus a foot at the cost of having a foot made professionally.
Just a thought, and you would have a reel to house your original foor so it is less likely to get lost. The 3 1/2 WB I have is 5/8 " between the screws
at DC so maybe this distance on the 3 1/2' foot was standard in the Dingley shop.

MFRS,
Thank you. I will measure this morning and see what I can come up with. Don |

Don - My reel is the same size as yours, measures a hair under 3 1/2", I said older brother not bigger brother
Your reel is circa 1927 - 1936, mine is 1911 - 1926.

I measured the spacing and it is 7/16" between centers. I will take and post pics when I get back to the house. Thanks for the info on the age of the
reel.

Appearances can be deceiving, dimensions have no consistency at all.
Measured two pre war 3 1/2" reels and the reel foot spacing was 7/8" and 3/4". Measured two post war 3 1/2" reels and the dimensions were 7/16" and 11/16". I guess it might be advisable to have the measurement of the reel foot screw spacing on a potential reel purchase prior to buying. I thought that the dimensions would have been about the same on reels of the same size & era. I wonder with all of the bench work if there was any thought given to production techniques of common items such as reel feet. |

Don, I have a 3 1/2 inch Dingley with a foot that was too long for anything....so I called Bill Franke at OnePfoot and sent the reel to him and he made one
that works on everything well.....did a great job....steve
also, the screw alignment and spacing was not symetrical.....Bill said they were frequently "cockeyed" and he needed the reel to get the holes to line up.....

My experience as well is that almost all the Dingleys are bench made, with the foot being drilled by eye. If you take one off & then try to put it back,
you'll notice that there's always a "correct" alignment--one direction works, the other doesn't. That's probably why the reels all
have feet punched with the same number as the reel interior. The feet were not interchangeable. Part of the great charm of these.

Thanks again everyone. I have looked at Onepfoot before. I will probably get in touch with him soon.

Here's a later 3 1/4" (Ernest?) Dingley perfect. It had a horrible homemade foot. I had Bill Archuletta make a new (exact duplicate) regulator screw
and he went ahead and made 2 screws for the foot. (The original screws were incorrect replacements)Bulldog sent me an "Old Young Pfoot", I got the
reel back this week, and it all went together right out of the box. Even the top radius of the foot, where it snugs against the reel body, is an exact, tight
fit. I'm happy.

Seriously though . . . I have one Dingley that has a foot mounted with 2 machine screws that I replaced with a brass foot from One P-foot. It was made as a
replacement foot for Young reels, but the holes were a perfect match. The original foot is now in a plastic zip-lock that will probably be thrown out when I
die.
The other alternative is to buy a classic rod that the foot will
fit. My Grangers and one FET rod will hold the longer foot with no problem. You'll be hard-pressed to find a modern rod that will accommodate a long
foot.
