Xuron/Phelps vise C-clamp base? |
Lead | ||
|
I've got an email in to Larry Kennedy (he's out fishing until today) asking if he would consider offering a portable, clamping base for the Xuron. If
there is any interest in this besides mine, please let me know so I can tell him when he contacts me. I would want any such clamp to retain the ball joint
capability.

I'd be real interested if they could replicate the old Darbee clamp base that this vise started out its pedigree with.

Got an email from Larry last night saying that they don't think they could produce the clamp economically enough to make it pay--looks like another project
for my workbench! I think I could adapt a clamp from another vise if it were wide enough to support the ball joint and adjustment screws, and were made of
aluminum. -CC

CC,
To aid you in your "project", here are a few images of the C clamp design that Peter Phelps &
company used in the late 1970's/early 1980's when they reintroduced this classic vise design… The material used
appears to be ¼ inch thick steel bar stock that was machined for the ball joint & tapped for the set screws. Good
Luck!

Thanks so much for the pics! I spent some time yesterday in my local fly shop looking at clamps for various vises in catalogs, finally settling on a generic
one that has a pretty big upper plate and cost less than $10. I may just take it to a machine shop to have the pocket for the ball drilled out and the screw
holes drilled and tapped. The clamp is aluminum, so the shop time shouldn't be much, and they could do it so much more accurately than I could in my
garage.
