Two more from a friend | #41

Dug these up from ancient emails. First is an early 3", ca. 1909-16. Second is a 1930s 3". Sorry, no inside pics of either for now. That would help
narrow down reel #1.

Does anyone know the actual differences in manufacture of the "white finish" of the earlier models and the "leaded finish" of the later
models? The 1903 reproduction has the so called "white finish". I'm curious if the processes were similar or totally different.

I don't, but IMHO, "in the white" kicks arse! | #43

I dunno why, but I don't find leaded finish becoming on the Bougle. On a Perfect it looks great. It's something about the pillar ears.

Reels with the white finish always seem to have more of the finish intactNot so in my experience - pretty well most of the original reels that I have seen (that is only about 25-30 though) usually have had the lacquer completely polished off them, most of the originally finished in black reels have also been polished but there is usually a residue in the stamping details. The reason is fairly straightforward - the finish is very fragile after 70 odd years and is very easily rubbed off (even without a cleaner or any kind of abrasive polish) and many of the reels actually live in display cases so corrosion of the bare metal is not an issue. I actually like the idea of the leaded finish but have yet to see one in the flesh and think that they are pretty rare, the black painted ones do tend to look a little battle weary as the paint wears / chips off. |

enough talk about these ol hardy bougle's , lets just see who would sell one , and please don't everyone email me all at once , i'd love to have one , just not the 3 inch size , to darn small , i had the repro and heck it's small , they size them i think from piller to piller , so to me the reel is like a 1/4 inch smaller i'd like to have the bigger 3 1/4 size , then it would hold a 5 wt i think ,

OK, I know...it's not a Bougle'. And yes, I have pillar envy.
But here's my wartime 2 7/8" no-line guard Perfect with the semi-matte black painted finish. Even the brass reel foot was painted black.
Keep those old Bougle's coming! Regards,

Guess what? I do fish the little black Perfect with a DT-4-F. But then, I don't let it bang around in the bottom of a drift boat! reelhimin: Thanks, Gary. Your Bougle' is as beautiful as I remember it...maybe more so! Best, Scott

Aransas, the reel is in great shape. It doesn't show in the picture but the white handle is crazed; other than that, it's about as good as it gets.
I'm guessing on the age and I am sure someone will chime in with a better answer, but I think late 30's-early 40's. I am also wondering where it
would fit in to Piglegs finish list? Probably #2. Thanks, Gary.

bowriver,
My 3" handles a 5 wt just fine with plenty of backing. reelhimin, If you have some green coloration within the crazing that would be what is referred to as a bubblegum handle, these were the replacement to the ivoroid handles but since the material crazed the black handle was then introduced CA 1922 or so...........

i had a repro reel that they made like the 1903 reel and i couldn't get a 5 wt on it with 75 yards of backing , i think when i measured the reel and not from the pillers it was like 2 3/4 in size , on them bougle reels when you see them say 3 1/4 to me that means the reel is like 3 inch , or they say 3 inch then i think they measure from across the reel and add in the pillers , am i wrong , just what is the correct way to measure the bougle reel ,
