Anyone know the story behind the 3 1/4" Green Hardy Princess? I have seen a few around but know little about them and have never seen them refered to
anywhere in print.

They came in a 3" size ( I owned one at one time) as well as the 3 1/4" size. I believe that there was a third size, 3 1/2". They were
anodized pale green with a gold foot, latch cap, cup and post for the green plastic handle. I have seen at least one offered which was painted green. I'm
not sure if that was original or not.

Is there a story behind them? Made for a certain market? Years of manufacture?
The 3 1/4" would seem like a very nice usuable size. A 3 1/4" reel in the lightweight series would have been perfect. I sometimes find the LRH too small, especially for DT lines & the Princess is too large for my needs most often. |

To quote James Hardy's book:
" . . the Green Princess in 1953 . . . . . It came about when a design consultant visited the firm seeking to obtain a consultancy for himself. He maintained that the drab colours of Hardy's reels held back sales and that the introduction of brighter colours would reverse such a trend. He was not engaged but some of his ideas were taken on board, amongst them being the use of colours. . . . . .sales were very disappointing . . . . It was taken off the market in 1959 . . . re-introduced in 1962. . . . in . gunmetal and silver"
