M O W Varnish | #5 | ||

Hi Jared,
Valspar bought out some small companies (M O W ). If you go to Lowes the Cabot spar exterior is the same as MOW red can. IMO. There is less and less small companies .P&L.was bought by Sherman Williams.

McCloskys MOW gloss vs Cabot Spar gloss | #6 | ||
|
I have been using McClosky's MOW Spar for my dip tube. My local hardware store stopped selling it as well as all Spar Varnish. I went to Lowes and
purchased the Cabot Spar based on an internet search that indicated they where the same (not on this site). Well after using the Cabot for the first time I
have determined that they are not the same. The Cabot is thinner and has a very different smell (isn't that scientific). Most of the ingredients are the
same as listed on the cans but I am not up to speed on my Oraganic Chem so I am not certain if some of the generic chemical family info on one can is the same
as the specific names on the other.
Well anyhow, as you would expect the finish was very thin. Has anyone else had simular experience with the two products or perhaps I have a bad can (or they changed the formula)? John |

John--have you bought a can of MOW lately? From what I've heard they have doctored its formula too so they may actually be the same now. It's getting
very hard to find decent organic based varnish locally in large metropolitan areas or those with air quality problems--Larry

MOW was reformulated a number of years ago to comply with new regulations. Many old time MOW users are not happy and have gone to other finishes.

The mist recent can I purchased was about 6 months ago. It could have been on a shelf or in a warehouse for years prior? The Cabots dipped a very thin coat
when heated to 110 deg. I am dipping a second rod at basement temp approx. 60-65 deg. It is also dipping thin. The look of the first rod is very nice. So far I
am pleased. By the way, the morning after using the Cabot for the first time the basement smelled like the old MOW varnish. Not sure what that means but?

Did you thin the Cabot's with anything or did it come that thin right out of the can? I make a habit of test dipping a piece of garden stake cane in a
fresh can of varnish just to see what its like--helps to avoid surprises--Larry

Larry,
I dipped a free spinning rod and a $75 Project rod. Both came out very well. Not sure about longevity but the finish is nice. We will see after the final coat. John |

I ended up making a second dip tube with MOW gloss, the other one has SW spar.
three rods have been dipped in the MOW, and I now prefer it to SW. It is much more stable -it took a long time for me to get SW under control, it gels over if you just look at it the wrong way, in the time it takes to just finish a coat on the wraps the stuff can skim over, in as little as an hour. I'm strongly considering dumping the SW tube all together, though it does impart a nice rich amber tone. Very happy with MOW. thinned 20% in the tube and over wraps. -jw http://shuksanrods.wordpress.com |
