Getting ready for the new season . . . |

Any tips for getting your gear ready for the new fishing season? I figure a quick cleaning and oiling will get the reels ready, and a wipe-down of the rods
should suffice. Should I be doing anything special to lines in my reels - maybe un-spooling the lines and cleaning them a bit?

That's a snowy late January - early February winter's afternoon project for me next the fireplace, classic music; and, one of the cats trying to play
with the fly lines.

Wax the jacket, clean the ferrules, reverse double taper lines if needed.

If your lines are plastice run them through a cleaning pad (I have used the cortland flote coat felt discs for years) I wax my rods but other than giving me a reason to fiddle with my tackle I'm not sure it's necessary. I also replace tippet spools yearly as mono degrades but many of my buddies don't and I can't tell a difference. If you haven't been tying enough all winter last chance to fill your boxes (or order in bulk if you don't tie) Spring has sprung here in TN and fishing is starting to improve......spring is heading north as we speak and will be there soon!!! Life is too short for cheap scotch and plastic rods.
