Hardy Serial Numbers ? |
Lead | ||
|
Was wondering what forum members know about the Hardy reels made in the last three to five years. I have a Hardy flyweight and a Bougle that both have serial
numbers that start with the letter J. Both reels were purchased around three to five years ago. I had a a person on ebay email inform me that when Hardy's
start with the letter J it means they were made in Japan. Is that true? I though that Hardy started to outsource their reels in the last year. Both reels are
at least three years old.
When did they start to put serial"s on the newer Hardy reels? Thanks Bob

I have been advised that reels with serial numbers beginning with J were manufactured in Korea, not Japan, and with A were manufactured in the UK. Call Ken or
Ray at Hardy North America, Lanaster, PA at 888-516-1247.

Not sure about other models, but all the new Bougle and Cascapedia models I have seen from Korea no longer say anything at all about England on the side plate,
so they now just say 'Hardy' and 'Cascapedia'. Bottom line for me now is I will not buy a Hardy unless it says 'Made in England' on
it somewhere. A number of E-bayers are claiming to still have made in UK reels, but they 'Hardy' on them, and nothing else other than the model,
that's a pretty clear indication that at least some part of them were made in Korea. Even if they were assembled at the factory, they are still suspect.
I bought a new flyweight in March, and it was the last one my local shop was able to get that was still English made, from here on out it will be only used
reels for me.

I listed a Bougle for sale in the classifieds and stated in my listing that it was one of the last made in England Hardy reels. I received a message from a
member informing that the Bougle reels with the serial # with the letter J at the start were made in Japan so searched the forum, found this thread and then I
removed the reference from the listing.
Since then I looked at the reel again and noticed on the original blue Hardy vinyl case that it says it was "Made in England" Now I am really curious. I thought that I had read that all Bougle reels after the Mark V were made in Korea and assumed that anything before was made in England. Is there anything firm from Hardy that tells us what reels were made in England? |

I bought a Bougle' and a Cascapedia 2 years ago. Neither said "Made In England", so I called the factory in England. A very nice woman there told
me that at that time, when they had first started outsourcing, that serial numbers beginning with "A" were made entirely in Alnwick, and were the end
of the run there. "J" serial numbers were made in Korea. Since then, I've heard reports of reels with serial numbers other than "A" and
"J", so it is less clear than it was. She did assure me that all "A" numbered reels were entirely made in England, at the end of production
there.

ZenCane wrote: unfortunately other members called and emailed people from hardy and there always seemed to be conflicting stories when the the last reels were made in england. i personally talked to three different people one by phone two by email and got completely different stories. imo it's best to assume that all the bougles after the MKV were made in korea. |

Does this apply to the bougle baby? I have 1 that starts with a J made for the Asian market, serial # on reelfoot and 1 made for the US market without a # on
the foot I did not take it apart to look inside. Thanks for any info. Mike

I emailed Hardy Canada on the weekend and received a reply this morning which states:
'All Bougle Mk IV's were made in England, only the Mark VI were made in Korea.' I guess that explains the 'Made in England' on the vinyl case. I wonder if there is some confusion regarding reels which were made to target the Asian market and someone misinterpreting the question that was asked where were they made, not who were they made to sell to? |

I have three Featherweights new enough to be machined bar stock, but old enough to definitely have been made in England (and marked that way). The oldest one,
perhaps 5-6 years old, has no serial number, of the two that are 2-4 years old, one has no serial number, and the other has a number beginning with
"A" stamped on the foot. I am a bit curious why some reels got numbers and others of the same vintage didn't.

This is all very mystifying, to say the least! I own a Mk IV which I bought in Bozeman, MT which has stamped in a circle..."MADE BY HOUSE OF
HARDY....ENGLAND" Its serial is JDZ989. I'm sure I bought it in 2000, long before I heard a peep about Hardy producing reels anywhere but Alnwick.
Whussuppp???, I say!

I called Hardy, a while ago, to see what kind of reel was designed for a certain Hardy rod to balance it. The answer I received was too the effect that the
reel does not balance out the rod, really. These workers are usually the young front-line workers, they sometimes answer just because you are looking for just
that, I guess this scenario, "I don't know, let me find someone who can answer your question" is not an option at many of the help desk.
Just to throw a wrench into this thread, I have a Bougle IV (serial # JDVXXX), the box has the #, as stamped on the reel, also Willowdale Alnwick, Northumberland. The neoprene case was made in Taiwan, reel has "Made by House of Hardy England". I would not label all "J" serial # reels as being made in Korea, but the neoprene case for mine was outsourced. This Bougle does not say "Made in England", I am just sitting on the fence waiting a confirmation from Hardy Rep. Edit: Thanks shoeless joe for confirming the MK IV was made in England.

MFRS- As noted earlier, my Mark IV (3.25") has the same plate engraving (stamp) as yours. Also a serial # on the foot JDZXXX. I bought mine in 2000.
When did you acquire yours? For me it is not so much whether or not it was made in Alnwick or Seoul...but rather or not Hardy is being upfront as to whether
or not it was outsourced. My reel is faultless...smooth as silk...but, as a person who bought it at a rather steep price, I'd like to be sure that I was
paying for an Alnwick reel rather than one from Korea...(pathetic Anglophile that I am!). I have enough bona fide Pre-war Hardys, Youngs, and Farlows that I
feel I'd rather spend that kind of money on a genuine made in Japan Kineya...or less money on a made in Korea Angel, Marksman etc. Inshort, I would like
to know where my MK IV was made!

Hi afgantrout, I sent you a PM but my previous response was to give you and others an assurance that this was confirmed. I bought my Bougle IV last summer
from "Ebay .UK", and at the time I searched to find when it was made and found it to be 1998 or around then. It was unused and it was a rather steep
price on mine also; I just noticed the 165.00 GBP, the original impression of the price can be seen, the reel went for when first purchased, a bit of a
difference now.
