Hardy grasp/handle question |
Lead | ||
|
To any owner of multiple modern Bougle's... Does Hardy use the same dinky handle on all models? Is the handle on a 3" Bougle' identical in size
on a 3.75" or 4" model? I'm curious because I'd like to replace mine with something a bit more substantion. BTW, my Bougle' is a Mark
IV 3 1/4.
Thanks for any help. I am fond of the 'manly grasps' on Dingleys and older Young reels, for example.

I have a Mk IV 4" and had to replace the handle because the wood used in the original one would swell up when wet and bind on the post. It got to the
point where it would seize up, so I had Highfieds replace it with a fat black handle similar to ones on '50's era wide Perfects. It looks and works
much better than the original handle. I think all the MK IVs had the same wood handle.

DBLSPEY, Thank you sir! I was on the phone with Highfields earlier today and I believe I'll be doing the same with mine...however, hopefully in Ivorine.
But a fat black one would be a fine second choice to the Plastic wood that's on it at present.
BTW, I think your photos on 'Classic reels at work" are simply superb.

Hello,
The pre-war -Perfects have a much fatter handle than the post-war Perfects. I very much prefer the pre-war handles. You should look into both before you decide. Just a thought. |

OrangeCaddis, I think we've discussed this topic before! Glad you put it into action. Did you do the retrofit yourself? I don't think I've got
the skills required...! Could you post a picture of your transmogrified Mark IV, please?

I would certainly have opted for a white handle if offered at the time my repair was done. The work was done on my reel about 6 or 7 ears ago and at least at
Hardy BC they did not have any white handles at the time. I think they have done quite a few of these replacements as the early wood handles did have the
swelling problem and it was as much of a practicality issue as a cosmetic one.

Definitely a functional design improvement, if I have any problems with mine it will receive the same retrofit.
