I just started a restore on this rod, a 9' 3/ 2 tip with formed wood rod holder. I'm thinking possibly an A & I?

A & I was really proud of their name and it generally appeared on the rod somewhere. It looks like H & I hardware.

As far as I know, A&I did not make any of their own bamboo rods. Notenoughhours is right, A&I typically had the maker mark their trade rods with their
logo or label. The reel seat and winding check are fairly generic, and I've seen similar hardware on both H-I and Montague's lower grade rods. The
ferrules look more like standard low grade Montague, and the windings appear Monty-like to me as well. If the ferrules are original, I'd say it's
probably Montague made, or a custom made rod, using Montague parts. I'd guess it was built in the 1920's.
I couldn't find a match for both the hardware and windings on the same rod in my reference materials. That doesn't account for much, since I believe there are probably another 50 Montague production models still undocumented prior to 1930. Catalogs and reference materials from this era are very scarce. In addition, Montague advertised and sold their hardware to other rod builders and individuals. So, just because it has all Montague hardware, doesn't mean it was made by Montague. A third factor that makes it difficult to identify Montague rods is that most of their rods were not labeled or marked in any way. Toward the end of the 20's they began putting acetate labels on the rods that they sold retail, but most trade rods remained unmarked, or marked with the retailer's label. . . . Rex TheMontyMan |

The rod had no markings that I could find. The varnish was quite thick and I first remove the varnish on one side then took photos along a ruler on my desk
before re-wrapping, so I'm quite sure about the silks I'm using are both correct and spaced right. I do know that the hardware is not n/s as I tried
polishing it and you can see where the plating is missing. I had thought it might be an H-I at first but it looked a little older, so I knew H-I had bought A
& I around the twenties and then guessed them.
Montague probably is the maker or like you say someone selling to Monty. I will attach a picture of what the rod looked like when I started yesterday morning. Thanks ![]() ![]()

If it helps, A&I was sold in 1930 to H-I & then basically disappeared except for reoccurring A&I lures etc that end sellers kept pushing--probably
old inventory.

A lot of Montague rods from the 20's were advertised with the jasper and red silk combination. The thick jasper/thin red/thick jasper sandwich (I can't think of a better way to describe it) wrap like the one a couple inches up from the winding check is very common as well. On most rods, you can't tell the red wrap is in there, until after stripping the old varnish. I wouldn't expect this particular reel seat or winding check to be nickel silver. They were both typically used on lower-end rods. I really like the way it looks, after your handiwork!!! . . . Rex TheMontyMan |

Here are a few of the rod and tube holder after the restore. I am making a sack for the wood holder and also a new wood rod tube. I am quite pleased on how
the rood turned out and the sky might not open up when you cast it but that's just because there are no clouds any where around! I put on a little
Reddington 4wt reel and the rod threw line out to 70 feet into a slight breeze.
I will be listing this in the classifieds next. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
