Short answer: there's no way to know, because the rod has been stripped, and I assume that means the ink writing on the butt has been removed(?) That is
usually (except on very early Grangers) the only sure way to tell what grade the rod was. The lowest grades -- Champion, Stream & Lake, and Victory -- had
one fewer guides than the higher ones -- Special and up.
The good news is that, with no ghosting, you can just re-wrap with the higher number of guides if you don't know what model it was. I believe on an 8642 that means 8 guides plus the stripper. Hopefully somebody will write in with the spacing (my only 8642's are the lower grades). The extra guide helps noticeably with the casting. |

Cool. That's a nice rod. I think it has a bunch of intermediate wraps as well, no? Or did W&M get rid of those?

Here's what I have on my older 8642 Granger Favorite measured at the center of each guide:
Tip Section (tip guide @ 0")
Guide 1 - 5 3/4"
Guide 2 - 11 11/16" Guide 3 - 18 1/4" Guide 4 - 25 3/8" Guide 5 - 32 9/16" Mid Section (end of female ferrule 0")
Guide 1 - 2 3/8"
Guide 2 - 11 3/16" Guide 3 - 20 1/16" Guide 4 - 29 1/4" Butt Section
Stripper Guide - 5 15/16" from end of female Ferrule
Hope this helps. If it doesn't make sense, let me know and I'll measure differently. Dean D
