I recently acquired a Phillipson Premium 9' 3/2, 5-5/8oz. This rod is in pristine condition, with the elliptical hammer grip in excellent condition, black
wraps tipped gold, varnish in excellent condition, both tips full length, etc. The handwritten inscription above the grip appears to be from the same hand as
that on my Peerless. The rod does not appear to have been refurbished. However, there are two curiosities that caught my attention: I cannot see any glue lines
or evidence of the use of Penacolite adhesive on any of the sections, and the reel seat is a Lamiglas aluminum D/L with a rosewood (I think) spacer.

Not sure if there was a period when Biil did not use Resorncinol glue. The reel seat maybe accurate as it's a "Premium" grade.
I haven't fished the 9' but I have owned and fished the 8.5' 5wts - Fantastic fishing tools.

I do have several Phillipson rods, Premiums, that if I did not know there was a glue line, I would not know there was a glue line. (does that sound like
something Yogi Berra would say?) And for a rod owner to swap out reel seats isn't that unusual. An objective appraisal of most Phillipson reel seats
would be "a face only a mother could love." I think most of this tinkering was taken place when these were just fishing rods, not objects de art.

Nice Brookie who fell victim to my 9' Premium Phillipson. For bamboo its a fast action rod.

Clear glue lines on my 8 1/2 footer. My reel seat mystery is I've never seen another seat with a bright aluminum threaded barrel and black hoods.

I have 9 Phillipsons and have examined several others; based on that, plus pictures I have seen on this and other forums, Phillipson had quite a variety of reel seats, including black, burgundy, green, gold, bronze and bicolor ones in aluminum; various color combinations in the plastic seats with aluminum threads, and seats with wood inserts. The glue lines are very pronounced on some rods and nearly invisible on others. In my opinion, Bill Phillipson was much more concerned with how a rod worked than how it looked, although I read that he demanded a discount when a shipment of red rod seats came in.
