HIP BOOTS WITH STEALTH SOLES |
Lead | ||
|
I have felt soles on my hip boots, which apparently are conducive to the retention of Didymo (Rock Snot) algae, at least as long as moisture remains in the
felt. Since my felts are worn out I think it would be a good time to replace them with stealth soles. Is my thinking correct in that Didymo will not attach
itself to stealth soles, and if so where can I obtain stealth soles, sized or unsized? I also have two pairs of felt soled wading boots that I am reluctant to
wear because of Didymo.

Andy,
At the risk of being completely wrong (I'm sure I'll be corrected if I am) Didymo will attach to any boot. The thing is, once it dries out the Dydimo is toast. Felt takes a long time to completely dry out, rubber does not. If you only fish once every couple of weeks, your sole (or soul *G*) choice might be moot. If you fish one stream one day and another the next, then felts are cause for concern. BTW, when are we going to get together and fish? Maybe your secret little brookie stream? |

Good question Andy, my boots are falling apart and I want to get "the right boots" Are the boots with the interchangeable bottoms any good ?

Based on my understanding of Didymo I believe spruce grouse is correct.

Review of Riverwalker - Sticky Boots | #5
|
That is a good review. One of the commenters makes another good point in regard to studded boots as I have worn my studded boots in some streams and have also
felt bad about how I was scratching up some of the rocks (or boulders). I would end up trying to step over or around the big rocks to avoid scratching them,
which would then make it more difficult to walk along the stream.

Monty,
I'll be watching, "yet my feet just slide into the Riverwalker". For an old guy like me with a little extra girth, I need something easy to get in and out of. My ideal would be a breathable, waist high wader with a sticky boot foot. If this ever comes about, what am I going to do with all the stuff I have now? Maybe TU would be willing to become an exchange center of some kind to funnel the stuff to beginning fly fishermen with tight budgets. I agree, an educational review.

Andy,
You mean like a "turn in your guns for cash" program like B'more sometimes does? Maybe the wading shoe companies could have a program where they would retrofit felt boots with rubber for a small fee. |

Andy, there are some great waist high bootfoots | #8

If the integrated boot isn't a big deal, then you have a good number of options.

Andy, I can remember years ago, I think it was before the felt was in stores in my area, all fisherman glued the normal short rug to the bottoms of the wader
with contact cement. I did this with mine and it lasted for years, if you could cut the worn-out felt from your boot and go to a rug store and get some rug
trimmings (I don't think there is any danger of getting shag rug anymore) and glue them on it would save you lots of money. This process was for the east
coast and you can get rocks any slipperier, the algae never seemed to stick or render the rug sole useless, the rug would just eventually wear away and it
would be easy to replace. May be worth trying to get more life from your older pairs.

C,
I like the idea of an integrated boot as long as its easy on, easy off.

Try a Resole! | #11 | ||

Your fears for theinsidious invader Didymo are well founded, and your sense of responsibility for the health of our streams is well placed. This menace has
the potential to degrade our precious streams to uselessness. But this one is something we can do something about. I recently had my venerable Simms boots
resoled with Aquastealth 5.11 w/ studs at Rocky Mountain Resole in Salida, Colorado for about $85, posted. I used them for the first time this past weekend on
the Davidson in NC. I was quite impressed. They did not feel different to my feet, and I found good purchase on the round cobble - algea-coated bottom (in
big current!). This was a good deal, a very professional job with a quality product, and saved about half the cost of a new pair of boots. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info t.f. BTW, I love your alias. Gave me a chuckle this morning trying to imagine what a tuna fart would be like. IS that the sound the can
makes when you first dig into it with the can opener?

Thanks Tunafart for the tip.
I have two pairs of Danners I'll need to get resoled before 2011 when felt will be illegal in my home areaof Southeast Alaska, and will look to them in Salida. Our only shoe guy retired a few years ago. I like your monniker too - makes think of "you can tuna piano but you can't tuna fart" - or Kenya. -Vinnie in Juneau |

Yellowstone Outfitters makes some and so does Orvis in both the Silver Lable and Tailwaters brands. All come with lace up, attached boots with aqua stealth
type soles.

Everything I've read about the latest aquastealth is that they are just as good as felt - which surprised me. Nothing has replaced studs though, Like
others have stated you do need to take precautions in regard to rock snot.

I expect if we knew all there was to know about the spread-vectors of Didymo, fisherman boot soles would not necessarily rate at the top
of the list.
