Good Smallmouth Bass Taper? |
Lead | ||
|
I'm looking for a good med action 6-7wt bass taper. Something that loads easy and can throw a med. size popper/diver. 8 - 8.5 ft range 2piece.
Any suggestions?

A nice bass taper is a Paul Young Texan. I have seen some that would take a 6 but most take a 7. It will throw a bass bug a good distance pretty
effortlessly. That taper is available on most of the the taper lists. The rod can double as a good streamer or light salmon/steelhead rod as well.

Hi Thousandstar,
I agree with Tim regarding the Texan. I don't fish for smallmouth bass myself (no time/trout trout trout), but I made this rod for a customer a while back who mainly fishes fror smallmouth bass and he loves it (he fishes the main-stem Delaware near Lakowaxen (sp?), a famous stretch for big smallmouths since Zane Gray's time). The 8'0" and 8'6" 7wt Morris Kushner tapers are also very popular with smallmouth bass fishermen in the Delaware river system. Chuck |

For me, a long day of throwing poppers with a rod that long would be way too tiring for my shoulder ..... a Dickerson 7613 with the "H" Tip (ala
Streamers made Rods) would be perfect, especially with a Rio Grand 6wt line. It would easily make cast of 60ft + of Line and would not tire me out.
Personal taste ,,, no right or wrong answer.

I use a heavy tipped Para 15 taper with a 7wt grand/clouser or T175/200 for general water bass fishing (personal favorite for bass fishing if throwing larger
flies), a beefed up Payne Canadian Canoe for big water with a 7wt and T200 line, and a Para 14 with a 6wt bass taper or a Teeny 130 for smaller bass fishing.
All are my own versions of these rods and not originals. I also have a P17 for a 8/9wt and a T275 line. I only like the Para's for bass rods, I'm not
fond of them for trout, there I prefer a Howells.

I know everyone hates this answer, but... it depends. Do you expect to fish deep lakes or rivers? Throw poppers and divers, or clousers, or heavily weighted
crawfish patterns? All of these things factor heavily into the decision, IMO. A moderate 5 wil satisfy nicely in some applications, whereas a powerful 7 or 8
would be a bonus in others. A lighter rod will NOT necessarily be less tiresome after a day on the water. If you don't have sufficient line mass to carry
your typical flies, then you'll work yourself to death trying to cast with line speed alone.
haul EDIT -- Oops, sorry. I see that you want to cast primarly poppers. I'm gonna leave my post, but will modify my answer to say that you still need to consider the size/density/wind resistance of the flies you'll likely use. A #10 Miss Prissy would dictate a different taper than a #4 Fruit Cocktail...

I have caught some good-sized bass with my Martha Marie but, as others have pointed out, it's not going to be the optimal rod to throw some of the heavier
or wind-resistant flies, bugs, and poppers. The Para 15 (shown) or the 8'6" Young models will be more
satisfying in that regard.
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of over
440 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories, etc. Thank you to all
who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

This past year I've been using a hollow-built 9' (clone) FEThomas Streamer special. It loads well with #7 and #8, is easy on the shoulder and will put
a popper in a teacup. Ben
