Posts: 13 03/30/2009 20:05	Jay, I searched my files and notes I have of Baird Fioster but cannot find a butt taper for the eight foot tips that you believe are Baird Foster's creations. The butt ends of the tips call for a 13/64 ferrule (.20313} despite the fact that the upper and middle sections of the tips are practically similar to a strong eight foot rod, which would require a 14/64 (.2187}. Since the taper closely resembles Garrison's designs, I suggest that you try to match the tips with a butt based on Garrison's 209 model, preferably the 209E. They were designed to accept a 13/64 ferrule. Of course, you will haver to lengthen the butt a few inches to match the tips. Keep in mind that the tips you have are top heavy, so make your taper adjustments accordingly. If I can be of further help, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me. Posts: 700 03/31/2009 12:42	Hi Guys, Well, that's it. I think I know what to do now. Sometimes 'close enough is.' I'll make these rods as one tip rods and space them out a bit so I can adjust tapers if necessary. The butts will be Garrison all the way, taper and cosmetics. Thank you to Thinkbamboo, Tom Smithwick and Harry Boyd for getting and keeping the ball rolling on this. It nagged at me to not have a name for these tips. Now I have a name, a face, a concept of the way they were made and some certainty about it all. I'll sleep better. There are, no doubt, other makers to be 'uncovered' in this way. Posts: 488 03/31/2009 13:31	Hi Jay - I would suggest that you take Gus' advice here and adjust Garrison's numbers a bit in the butt. Because the tips are a bit stiffer than Garrison's design, you are going to need some extra zip in the butt to turn them over. You can certainly follow Garrison's general slope, but what I would do is start the butt at .203, but swell the taper by about .003 4-5" back from the ferrule. Continue that all the way to the butt. There are other ways of doing it, of course, but this ought to keep the rod a 5 weight. If you just use Garrison's numbers, I think the butt will feel mushy and you won't be able to cast a tight loop. If you want, I'll play around with the numbers and see if I can come up with a respectable looking stress curve.

Posts: 703 03/31/2009 22:38	Hi Guys, This is really what's great about this forum. I just follow my nose and all this unfolds before me. I see that the tip has some extra in it so reconfiguring the butt makes sense. I used to have the old Hexrod [I think] program that I used to extrapolate tapers but I haven't used any of the online stuff that's available. I'm just done straightening strips for the mill and cutting to length so I have time but if someone has an idea for it ..... I need to figure that stuff out though. I have other tips that are different tapers and lengths so I'll have to make similar adjustments, 'cause they have the heavier tip on a Garrison taper. Harry's right about seeing one of Foster's rods. I mean I want to see at least a picture. Someone should have one. I wonder if they were marked? Thinkbamboo said they were Garrison look-a-likes. I think he used the word clone, so for me to proceed on that basis is OK as I've done it before. The picture Tom has shows a more gradual taper from the grip to the cane. I like that. It might be easier to walk the thread up. Again thanks for starting this thread and for helping me out. Jay Edwards
