Display Cases for Rods? Reels? |
Lead | ||
|
I need to clean up my office before fall and winter set in and get my rods out of the corner where they are stacked up in their tubes. I was wondering what
other people had for display racks that I could buy or build that protected the rods (especially from an inquisitive four-year old,) while still having them
organized and on display. Something that the wife would not feel she needed to dust every week either! I would think storing a rod vertically would protect it
from getting a set? The same with reels, though I think I'll make a simple box, glass door, with tempered glass shelves for all the reels. Has any one
devised a case that is 2 fold, both rods and reels? Any Photos? Regards, Jon

When a local fly fishing shop closed, I bought a Sage rod rack and a DB Dun case rack -- now they are on display in the corner of my office and the rods lean
against the chairs or stand in the closet.
Since you want something enclosed -- what about an armoir or a TV cabinet. With the new flat screen TV's the home entertainment cabinets (the ones that held large, deep sets) might also be available used. Reels could rest in the drawers with other equipment and you could make or install ready-made rod clips in the upper portion. Just ideas. Regards, Dennis |

Early on my rods were mainly 3 pc 2 tip so my wife bought me an antique hutch. It was in a little consignment shop and did not cost a lot of money nor did it
have any shelves so I used thin panels of wood until I stopped in at a local yard sale where a gent had tempered glass shelving for sale at $5 each, I bought 3
and they fit like they were made for the hutch! Since my rods are mainly 2 pc 2 tip now I keep my reels and pipes on display there......

I had this same issue a couple years ago and so this was my solution. I built this rod rack from 11"X1" pine and some extra 2X4's so the cost
was cheap. I added a little stain and it doesn't look too bad. Better than sitting in the corner.
My reel case took a little more time and is not enclossed like you mentioned but I really like the way it turned out. I simply built a box and then put
3/4" dowls through the sides. I attach the reels with simple plastic zip ties. I added some lights to the top from a kit.

Great work guys on those racks and cabinets...I am especially like Seabass's reel display case
...I had something similar in mind for when I get around to having some free
time! Tightloup, that cabinet must have taken some time to plan out and then build...very nice indeed. Anyone else care to share?

Thanks. Construction of the case and drawers was simple. The glass door was tricky though. I had no idea if the frame of the door would support the weight
of the glass. Making up my mind on what I wanted to build likely took the most time. I got some ideas from the Vigilant fly rod and gun cabinets. I have a
card catalog style cabinet in the works right now for tying supplies, etc. I have the case finished and I am now working on the drawers. When I finish,
I'll post a picture.

I built a top and bottom section for my rod display that is based on using those clear plastic florescent light tube covers from one of the big box stores. It
works great and I was able to make labels for the tubes that go along the bottom just above the black plastic end caps. I cut some cork to cover the holes
where the two prongs are to extend past the opening to keep the contents from falling out plus it keeps the dust out.
If I can ever figure out how to post a picture or two, I'll show you what I'm talking about. Brad FF |

Hey, Kermit!
Thanks for the prominent location in your display pics. I appreciate it. That's a nice individual display - did you make that? |

Here's a rotating rod rack I made to display rods...pretty easy to make and fine if you have limited floor space.

Any Other Fly Rod Rack Examples? | #12 | ||
kermit wrote:I like this rack. I wonder if there are any other examples of racks that can accommodate rods with reels attached? I'd like to have one that can be mounted on a wall and preferably such that it is up above the floor. It would be in an area that has a vaulted ceiling, which would allow my graphite rods to remain pieced together when I'm using them. I know that I'd not want to leave my bamboo rods pieced together for any period of time. |

oddsnrods wrote:I guess because I have been told and have read that it's not a good idea. Perhaps because a pieced together bamboo rod leaning against something for a long period of time may cause it to get a set. But I'm pretty new to bamboo rods and maybe I'm mistaken. I guess if the rod could set straight up in the rack without a bend then it would be okay? |

I agree.. dainty fly rods may be prone to a set I suppose, however having made a few, I have leant all kinds of rods (fly,bait-casting etc.) against walls and
sides of boats without ill effect. Upright and made up should not be a problem and can display the rods quite nicely. The plus side, I suppose, is that if you
are partial to giving them a waggle during the dark months then the n/silver ferrules will be spared the wear by all that assembling of the sections

Short Tip |

Vintage gun cabinet from a junk store - inside was trashed and a masonite(!) back had been added, leaving it wide open for modding into a tackle cabinet.
It's very shallow, the weight of guns would make it ok but with just tackle, the cabinet will tip forward with the door open. So I installed hidden
brackets and screwed it to the wall.

These are some nice pics and ideas of rod display cases...
I am supposed to go to my parents house this weekend and while I am there I will be picking up a 100+ year old apothocary (sp?) cabinet that is huge and absolutely beautiful. It will end up making a most striking rod display case when I am finished with her! There are three glass doors across the front(original antique lead glass that still has the slight uneveness to them that says "antique") with handmade hinges and brass clasps. The finish is in a very dark cherry color and it weighs probably 250 pounds or so and is solid wood like things were made when my late grandpa was just a kid sometime around WWI. Underneath the glass cabinets are three shadow box style shelves (for reels!!) that are actually doors as well that open up to reveal hidden storage compartments behind them that will be great for fly lines, fly reel pouches, etc. In all I think it is about 6.5 feet tall and probably 6 feet or so wide so there will be plenty of room for a few nice rods! I plan on lighting the inside where the rods will be and when she is done I will post some pics. She will be in my basement workshop with me because my wife does not have the same appreciation for antiques that many other folk do
I just don't know how I am going to get her unloaded into my workshop safely. I will probably remove the glass from the doors during transit and pad her really, really well. She will be the ultimate bamboo rod shrine.

Sounds awesome. As a former glazier, may I suggest that the best place for the glass is mounted in the doors? The edges are the most vulnerable area and it can
be tough to find that old glass in big sizes. I'd take off the entire door and transport it as a unit. My 2 cents
