I might do something stupid for this guy.

Yes, I know I would risk my life for my dogs - not sacrifice it knowingly but risk it.

Like the hunter, the hawker and the fowler, the fisherman takes life in finding his pleasure. It is reasonable to ask
of him that he make it as keen and thorough and satisfying, as productive of growth in himself as he reasonably can. For only then can it be the strong and
sensitive pleasure of a civilised man.

Starting in 1963 to '78, I campaigned pointing dogs, (English Setters and Pointers) in field trials from N.B. Canada to South Carolina. Trials were, in the
main, run from horseback. NB in the fall, to the Championships in Baldwinsville NY, to the Championships in Hoffman Carolina, etc.). In the spring of '72 I
acquired a derby dog from an acquaintance in Michigan and and decided to run him a small trial at Lost Pond Club which was located a few miles outsige of
Binghampton, NY. We turned this dog, (don't remember his name) loose at about 9:00 AM and he promptly went out of sight. A good thing in field trials. Soon
a scout or member of the gallery came riding up with the news that my dog was drowning in one of the many ponds (tanks) that were on the property. Riding at a
gallop I found the tank and saw the dog going down for the nth time. He was paddling like hell but going nowhere but up and down. It seemed like I thought
about the situation a long time but I'm sure it was only a few seconds before I kicked off my boots and heavy jacket, dove in and pulled him out. Froze my
butt of on the ride back to the clubhouse. I was 37 at the time and stupid. Gave the dog away to a hunter that night and he hunted and loved that dog for many
years.
Last part of the story, my 5 year old son pulled a 5 1/2 pound rainbow out of one of the ponds that day......on worms. |

Year ago I read this somewhere. I think it's pretty accurate:
"In general, people are more important than animals, but some animals are more important than some people." |

Dammit Joe, you and Kipling too. A-holes! I loved a collie so MUCH once. But I must be living right because I have a new border collie, albeit a three legged
rescued one, and a bamboo fly rod.

No, I can get another dog, but not another life.
The trout takes the fly, the line tightens and it's like I was blind, but now I
see.

I love dogs, and animals in general, and while my dogs are my family, they are not human. I would not risk my life to save my dogs' lives, and it would
surely cause me grief the rest of my life. I would, however, risk a great deal of injury. |
