Can anyone offer a recommendation for a guide service on the Black Canyon stretch of the Gunnison? Many thanks.

LeRoy's Pleasure Park:

Gunnison River Expeditions; Contact Al DeGrange or
Black Canyon Anglers; contact Rick Dudzinski. Please tell them Jeff sent you!!! Or Leroy for the Smith Fork down. As Warrick posted (He'll tow you on up for a sweet float trip back down) He sctually will jet boat you up and he has the capabilities of carrying small inflatables. But he does not "Tow " anything with the jet. I have guided for Leroy and he has the Jet going now and is booking for the 09 season. I have guided that stretch off and on for 22 years and consider it my home waters.

I have no doubt that Jeff is "da' man" when it comes to advice on fishing The Black Canyon. But it also brings back some delightful memories for
me.
A number of years ago I spent three great days (and nights) floating through the Black Canyon National Monument and on downstream from there. The hike down into The Canyon and the float itself were absolutely spectacular. I still can't believe how those big trout would come up through several feet of green water to smack my fly. All while you are drifting along a few feet from a sheer wall looming 1500 feet above the water's surface...WOW! And I also remember watching the red-legged Chukar partridge literally running up and down those same sheer walls. Neat! It's a GREAT river and a mystical place. You will certainly enjoy the experience! Regards, Flyman

Flyman,
You caught the essencs of the Place and how magical and mystical it can be and Thanks for the kind words!!! I love that river and will always be enthralled by its vistas and the creatures that call the canyon home. From the bighorns and the Peregrines to the otters and the ouzels, and occasionaly the rare sighting of a pygmy rattler and the collared lizards wearing there emerald coats to the descending notes of the call of the canyon wren echoing back and forth from canyon wall to wall is best experienced and it fishes pretty darn good too!!! What rod would be suitable here?
I've seen the movie "Salmon fly hatch Gunnison river" and the big bugs tied on seems to need a nice yet powerful #5 rod. I have a 8.3ft #5 rod from Carlin coming. I bet it would kick some Gunnison bows |

Amazing fishing there! | #6 | ||

I well remember I fished the Black Canyon 11 years ago; it was just amazing. However, I cannot recomend you any guiding service since we were there by
ourselves (we started in one of the parking and then we went down stream in the other shore untill got dark, swiming to cross the river several times despite
the cold -very- water), but I do recomend you the fly we used: big dry fly attractors around and behind the rocks, and the rod, # 5 or 6 since these rainbows
are like submarines in strong current!
If I have the time, I might scan some pictures and post them later. Good luck and enjoy! Ra. |

Jeff would know best, but your not really floating with a guide service in the actual Black Canyon section as the its in the National park where commercial
guiding is not allowed. Your somewhat below that floating through the Gunnison Gorge section of the Canyon. Incredible scenery and fishing. Gold medal rated
water by the State of Colorado with fish counts in the 5000 plus per mile. Lots of big fish and the rainbows are coming back. I spend time hiking into the
Black Canyon spending 2 or three days camping and fishing and for me it is the best trout fishing I have ever experienced. It is truly a special place that
fortunately is forever protected. Plan on my first float of the year down the Gorge in a couple of weeks.

If I ever am in the opportunity to experience this amazing treat of nature, when's the best time to consider? I understand the 2nd week in June is mostly
when the salmon flies start to hatch. How long does this hatch go on?
And who would like to join me in this epic camp out? Jay

Jay,
I would be honored to share the river with you!!!! The month of June can be shear magic with as many as 7 differant adult stones on the water at the same time along with Caddis ( 7 species and at least 3 species of mayfly) all at the same time , the main hatch can start as early as the last week in May and can run through the first of July depending on Water conditions. In July you can have the yellow sally's in a #16 almost all month long and into August along with good terrestrial action (Hopper fishing can equal the stone fly hatch) and the trico hatches are truly incredible. Bob, two weeks huh? Call me!!! Jeff |

Jeff, that's an amazing generous offer!
Sounds like madness with all those bugs out at the same time. Are you sure folks don't get totally out of rage when they see fish are taking only that one bug you just don't happen to have in the fly box? |
