Wanting to get into bamboo and a friend suggested this site. I recently picked up a South Bend 359-9 that needs some tlc and one of the thoughts I have is to make it a banty rod. Most of the banty rods I've seen suggest cutting the butt section down and mounting a handle so the ferrule is under the cork handle - the ferrule edge basically becomes a winding check. If I do this the overall length of the rod would be around 6 to 6 1/2'. What I'd like to do is mount the handle on the butt section but leave about an extra 8-10" of butt sticking out of the handle before the ferrule. This would give me some cane to inscribe something, add some decorative wrap and would give me a slightly longer rod - right around 7' or so.
I guess my question is (before I cut the bamboo) would lengthening the handle an extra 8" or so make any noticeable difference in the action of the rod vs inserting the ferrule under the cork handle? I've never cast bamboo before and have only been flyfishing about 4 years so I'm definitely in strange territory here.
Thanks,
Steve
