H&H Hooks | #1 | ||
|
I have used Mustad hooks forever. When they discontinued all the ones I normally use and jacked up their prices so much, I decided to try some different
brands and since I had an order to go to H&H I picked up some of their std. nymph hooks and some 3X nymph hooks for tying woolybuggers, etc. These are
Korean made hooks. The first three #12 or 14 nymph hooks I put in the vice to flatten the small barb I snapped the point off. Obviously they are lighter and
more brittle than the Mustads I was used to. I was going to trash them but decided to try some more and to be more careful in pinching the barb. I have since
tied several dozen flies without incident. I have fished the resulting flies a modest amount and caught a number of trout up to about 16" without
incident. So the hooks seem fine. I will continue using this batch and may switch over to them permanently. I did notice they had one problem. On
consecutive casts I lost the same pattern to the same snag in the middle of one run. Clearly the hooks' fault.

you might want to give the fly-shop hooks a try. they seem to be very good. they have their own extensive range of hooks that they import from either Japan or
Korea, cant remember.
If a hook is that brittle like the one you mentioned I wouldnt hesitate to trash them. there are way too many good and cheap hooks out there. Switched over from Tiemco to Hayabusa at one time to save some money. A move I always regretted because the Hayabusas were brittle too. Some of the hooks were also not hardened properly. Switched back to Tiemco, Kamasan (very good hooks for the money) and Partridge and have been very happy again ever since. |
