What Am I? |

Just received this rod which I purchased on line. Does anyone have an idea what it is? Measures 7 ft, 2/2 weighs 3.8 oz, size 13 ferrule. No markings or
identification.
Thanks in advance for your input.

I think I've discovered the answer. Reel seat looks to be an HI Princess. Cork Handle is similar but looks to be shaved down toward the reel seat.

Looks like an H-I winding check, the type found on many Wards trade rods. The darkened cane is reminiscent of the Wards Premier line of trade rods that H-I produced. I'd guess the reel seat was an add on. It appears to have a swell to the butt of the cane. Is that correct?? I haven't seen too many H-I's with a swell. . . . Rex TheMontyMan |

Yes, it has a swelled butt. I found pictures of one at Ricksrods.com. Same reel seat, swelled butt and darkened cane.

Heck, throw a few guides on it, replace the ferrule wraps, and go fish with it. You may end up with a very fishable rod. Ya' never know!!

That's why I bought it. I've got an H-I Tonka Prince the casts a DT4 great. I'll use that for the guide spacing. Any recommendations for
sealing/refinishing an impregnated rod?

I would varnish the whole rod. I'd also suggest using more guides on it than the Prince has, it will cast and perform much better. If you need a spacing
suggestion, I can furnish one later when I'm at home.
With a size 13 ferrule, I'd start with a 5wt line on the rod.

How do you know it's impregnated? Also, without exception, the impregnated H-I rods I've seen are also varnished. Your rod does look like a Tonka
series H-I or similar trade rod, but without seeing the ferrules and grip close up, I can't say I'm certain about that. If it is a Tonka series, the
grip has definitely been shaped- or more probably, replaced.

The rod it's similar to located at Ricksrod.com is described as impregnated. It's also the same color as a H-I Cascade I've got that is also
impregnated. It definately has a new or reshaped grip. The ferrules are new as well and are not attached. They look like they are from Golden Witch.
Robert, I'd welcome your offer for spacing. |
