Bamboo bait casting rod |

I know, I know, a bait casting rod question? I started collecting a few old Pflueger bait casting reels recently and thought I should have a rod to go with
them. I picked up a 3/2 rod off that internet auction place and just received it. I have never seen or heard of a 3/2 bait caster. Has anybody else? It came
in a three pocket canvas sock witht he butt and mid in two piockets and a mini aluminum, brass capped, tip tube in the center pocket. It has nickel silver
hardware but no identifying marks, logos or decals whatsoever. The fellow who refinished it said there was nothing on it when he got it either. My camera is
out of service at the moment but I could post a link to my completed auction if I won't get flogged. Any thoughts or input greatly appreciated.............

I got one a them rotary worm boxes that go on your belt I'd sell you cheap. I'd throw in the worms left in it from last year as a bonus. You can cut a
forked stick along the bank to prop the rod on.

I'm planning to make a plug caster based on the famous Marinaro/Fox taper from "Advance Bait Casting," and was thinking about making it a 3pc
with a Champion featherweight type handle. Topwater plugging for smallmouth bass with light tackle is high on my list of great fun! I'm guessing there are
more than a few around here who would agree.

Hi Guys, How long is it? I love the old bait casters [plug casters] as much as my fly rods, almost. I've got a bunch. I, too, have some Marinaro rods
in the works. If it's three piece it may be a Henshall-style rod. I have a 7', 3pc., 2tip marked A&F with tunnel guides that is way cool.
Gnomes Traveling Rod Show had several nice bait rods as well. Ah'll tell ewe what. What? Ah jist tol' ewe what! Ooops, let's get a hot rod
tournament reel on a nice bamboo rod and see how we do. That edjicated thumm is kinda hard tuh cum by. [Why am I talking this way?] Jay Edwards

I love bamboo bait casters too. Early Heddon ones are fantastic, so are some of the Divine Tournament casting rods. Monty made a serviceable rod, too. But the
Rolls Royce of bamboo baitcasters is the Andrew Kull of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin models (written up in my book Forgotten Fly Rods Vol. 1). I got a chance to see
one after the book came out, and I will say I can now understand why a Kull hand made baitcasting rod cost twice as much as almost any other rod, fly or bait,
on the market at the time. Simply unbelievable craftsmanship.

I think that bait casting rods are "cool" and have a number of them. They share space with a number of old fly rods with out a problem. They include
rods by Divine, Landman (VL&A), Chubb, Monty, and 2 A&B rods.
I even have one Monty( 2/2) that have those Hex ferrules, as seen on that ebay rod, a very nice rod by the way. Bruce |

At some point, and I don't know where it should be, a rod ceases to be a baitcaster and becomes a bait rod, or trolling/stillfishing rod. That's
something for another thread. Meanwhile...
Todd As far as I'm concerned, the lovely bait rod you sent my way is a Bartlett. It makes a fine companion to my early Bartlett fly rod. My thanks again. Here's a few quick shots of yet another restoration in progress, this time the Montague 6' 3/2 baitcaster I recently picked up for peanuts at an estate auction. First photo is the shape it was in when I brought it home. Note that the varnish is white from moisture exposure. Pix 2,3 and 4 show it today, half rewrapped over a base coat of varnish. Check the teeny agate tiptops, the serrated rails on the quality seat, and the high grade Montague ferrules. I am tracking down some dark blue velveteen to re-cover the formcase.

I have a couple Heddon casting rods I was looking for info on and came across this thread. They are 1 piece rods 6' length model name Reliable #451. They
have an exteme swell to a ferrule which fits into the Pal style handle.
They need rewraped, the varnish is in excellent shape, I was trying to find out what the original color would have been on the wraps. Any help on color or other info would be appriciated. Mike |

In the 1949 Heddon catalog the 451 was listed as being "wrapped golden orange", which sounds like what I get when I use Gudebrod 209 thread.

So, you like old bait casters? Here's my favorite old Divine bait rod. Dates to about 1900. For those who aren't familiar with Divine, the #115 on the reel seat is the serial number and indicates this rod was made after 1900, before 1905. Calcutta Cane. HEAVY NS hardware - some of the fanciest metalwork I've seen on an old rod. The oldest style Divine ferrules are seen on this rod. The NS trumpet guides are each stamped "Made in Germany" on the bottom of the long foot. This restoration came out pretty nice. This rod has two mids and two tips that mix and match to make different rod length and taper. All parts are fitted to a wood form and in a canvas bag. You can see my "rod map" in the background. Here's the Before and After pics: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
Check out the extreme swell in the butt - I like the way that looks!

This is a Leonard Baitcast version of the 6ft Fairy Catskill fly rod it has inked on the case 1 1/2 oz The cork grip and reelseat combined length is 61/2 in,
it has two tips and a ferrule plug. The reelseat has two of the tiny buttcaps from the fairy rod a swelled butt and pinched tournamant style snake guides. It
is in excellent original condition It was made for no more than 3/16 lures. It will also cast a 2 or 3 wt fly line pretty nice. I have a nice small collection
of baitcasters but this is my nicest and most unique. I have shown it at a few shows and no one has seen another.nor have I seen it in a catalog. It was either
an employee rod or a special order. I will try to post a couple of pics of a couple more later. Keep up the good work ! Best,Paul

Paul H. Young made a big baitcasting rod model called the "Oregon Egg Rod," with which Ted Williams caught his first bonefish. But he made many
smaller models, as did Payne, Thomas, Edwards, and others. This is a baitcasting rod built by Paul H. Young, dated September 1953 (my birth month and year).
6'0", 2/1, lightly flamed cane, decorative spiral wraps, Detroit stamp on seat, marked in PHY's handwriting, first line: Dana Summers Sept. '53 second line: 6' 3.70 oz. 3/8 oz. lure third line:
13/64" Fer. 7/64" TipTop Also marked #3 in different handwriting,
on both butt and tip. Bob Summers told me that Dana Summers is not a relative of his. I bought this rod from E-That-Must-Not-Be-Named, where it was listed as
"South Bend Fly Rod." Little mix-up in the titles there.
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of over
445 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories, etc. Thank you to all
who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.
