When did Hardy put that castle on their reels? Is it any detriment?

Must have been the day after a big party with lots of alcoholic beverages...
But seriously: somewhere in the early eighties, Viscount and Marquis models, if I'm not mistaken. Wilfred de Bruijn

I know how we can differentiate our reels in the marketplace...
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

Was the plastic spool latch cover and the rubber caliper check part of the Harris & Sheldon attempt to lower the cost of producing the Marquis &
Viscount reels? Sometime in the late 70's I think.
Certainly am glad that they didn't continue with that approach or think where Hardy would be now, if they were still around that is. Good thing that someone changed the direction of their reel making at that time. |

So these reels would not be a reel that would bring top money? Are they any good as just fishing reels for the price?

Even Schwiebert complained about them. Some might find them a bit "kitchy."
Not the value pricewise but they should be fine to use. |

Can the plastic round and castle latch covers be converted to the round aluminum cover...assuming one can find the parts?

I believe the metal latch will work on spools with the plastic versions, but I've never had a spare or the occasion to try my theory.
I'm away from home right now or I'd check it out. Flyman
