Bill Edwards Quadrate Series 50? |
Lead | ||
|
What's is the smallest length Bill Edwards built in his Quadrate 50 Series? According to Campbell's and Keane's books they started at 8'.
Thanks, Dennis |

Dennis,
I too have seen several 7'6" 3 pc. rods in the #50 series. I haven't seen anything below that with a #50 designation on the shaft. I think they were probably marked custom below that as it would probably be a special order rod. Tim Zietak |

Dennis, Like the others, I too have seen one 7'6" 3/2 Edwards Model 50... but the one rod in my 30+ years of messing with 'boo that I regret selling was an 8' 3/2 Model 50 with the mid down about 1.5".... I do miss that rod.. ron |

I may be all wrong in this but since regular three-piece fly rods were catalogued in #s 51 to 58 yet some turn up as plain #50 in other sizes it seems to
be a number for "custom" or "other." Over the years such oddities as a 5-piece pack rod and a 2-piece 12' salmon rod have been offered.
Edwards is known to have done custom work and experimental jobs. Somebody (Keane?) had one a while back that was said to be truly parabolic and another
7-footer was said to be for a #8 line. All sorts of wrap colors and patterns show up.
I think plain "0" numbers mean a rod is within a particular series but "different" in some way...therefore 30, 40, 50, 60. The "0" numbers weren't ever in the catalogues. |

WatercolorMan,
I remember you posting pics of the Edwards Dartmouth in the past. I love it and hopefully I can get a #41 in the future. Is it a med-fast action? Thanks, Dennis |

It is a Medium/Fast outstanding Dry Fly action with a DT4 or WF5 line. On a windy day the WF6 will flip a fly fast enough to work well. It bends well down into the area just above the grip. I understand the seven foot rods are scarce. The only seven and a half Edwards I know of was a Fast Dry Fly with a DT5 line. Alan

Here's a pic of my Edwards Quad #50 that I just picked up. Takes a DT4 or WF5 line and displays a powerful med-fast action. Love those quads.

An Edwards 42 | #10 | ||

The rod below is an Edwards 42 7'6" restored by Sam Carlson years ago. I was lucky enough to acquire it in unfished condition along with the letter
from Sam to the owner, sent at year 11, I believe, in the waiting period for Sam to get to the work of restoring the rod. The letter indicated that Sam was
nearing completion of the work. The letter was written two years before Sam actually completed the work. I believe that this may be the rod described in
George Black's book, "Casting a Spell." Anyway, this rod is a joy to fish as are, I am sure, the other Edwards featured on this page. Ric

To my dismay | #14 | ||

A few months back I won a mint Edwards Quad 8' 2/2 5/6wt. #43. I advised the seller to pack it good but she ignored my suggestions and this what I
received. She also failed to tell me there was no cap to the rod tube so in transit the tips moved back in forth in the shipping tube. Bottom line she did
nothing to protect movement of the tube in the shipping tube nor did she seal the top of the rod tube. I almost cried and in the end I got my money back after
some threats(since she blamed the PO) but I would rather have had the rod.
