I'm a fly fishing guide on Oregon's North Umpqua River, mostly steelhead year around, but I also guide alot of trout trips on the N.U., McKenzie and upper Willamette Rivers Spring, Summer and Fall. My website is www.5riversguideservice.com I've been fly fishing (single hand glass and graphite rods) for about 35 years. I've been spey fishing for the past ten. Just recently I've gone nuts over cane rods. I love them, and I love everything about the historical aspects of our sport. Classic reels, silk lines, gut leaders, blind eye "gut loop" flies, the works! But alas, I'm a complete rube about most of these subjects. So in my quest for knowledge I found this incredible website! Please forgive me for my soon to be posted - foolish questions about all of this equipment and I'll thank any and all of you in advance for your indulgence and patience as I try to learn all I can about these subjects.
I currently have a cane rod being built for a photo essay I'm working on this coming summer. The rod is being built in Corvallis, Oregon. It will be a two piece, 8 1/2 foot 7 weight. I've already procurred one silk line. I've also dressed a number of bline eye, gut loop classic steelhead flies. I have a friend who will provide me with some gut leaders. I'd still like to find additional leaders and or lines that I can use. My plan is to fish gear that is as close to 30's era equipment and photograph North Umpqua summer steelhead being taken (and released) using this type of gear. I even have one fly that belonged to Zane Grey (given to me by his son, Loren) that I may use at some point.
Anyway, thats why I've joined your group and I look forward to many educational conversations and "learning" moments in the coming weeks and months (years?) from all of you. Thanks again in advance!
Sincerely,
Dean Finnerty, Cottage Grove, Oregon
