Appealing to the general knowlege of the board.Does any one have the dressing for a fly called the kaaterskill? So far I have been stumped and would rather
avoid the old and hard way of talking to the old timers from my kneck of the woods.I do not have the time.Believe it is an old catskill patern originated
around the Phonecia area.

Tell you what. If no one else here can help, post your inquiry on another site:
http://outdoorsbest.zeroforum.com/zeroforum?id=68 There're several guys there who are well schooled in Catskill patterns, old and new, and have connections to the CFFC. Maybe they can help. If you don't get the help you hoped for, I'd suggest that a simple "Thanks, that's not the pattern I'm looking for." would be appropriate.

"kaaterskill" was the yuku profile name of the late fly tier Terry Finger, who participated in this forum. But I do not know whether in choosing this
name he had in mind a fly pattern, or was referencing Kaaterskill Falls or Kaaterskill Creek.
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of 420 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories,
etc. Thank you to all who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

slw, I appreciate the effort my friend. Upstate was asking on my behalf, when we go to the museum [Upstates other home] in 2 weeks, we will dig through the
archives there.

It turned out to be a toughy for me, too. I dug through 7 books on Catskill tying/history/tiers and came up blank except for the Katterman. Good luck on your
search. I'll look forward to the results.

My late friend Terry Finger used that name on the forum and would have know and had the answer I'm sure. I never new a finer tier. He mentioned once.. if
I remember correctly Kaaterskill was the old spelling for Catskill.

Terry Finger still does have the answer, God bless him .....
--- Look at his profile on this board -- The avatar / icon graphic which he used is a fly in a vise - could this be a Kaaterskil ??? Howard |

Yep, I'm sure there is a reason Terry chose that as his handle. As I type this, I am looking up at a plate of wet flies he tied and framed for me in 2005
(S/N 2 in a series of 10) - no Kaaterskill, and no Kaaterskill in the letters I have from him, or any of his articles that I have in my files (or in the Box of
Catskill dries he sent me almost 20 years ago).....

I'm not sure if its there, but Terry used to write a regular column for my fly club's newsletter..The pattern may be there, it may not, but you can see
some fine examples of Terry's flies. Cheers.

In the March 07 issue of the set newsletters which CRCADIS directed us to ---
http://www.ozarkflyfisher...ers/nl_y07/nlmar_y07.pdf At the head of Terry Fingers article on page 4 is the actual photo which Terry used for his avatar on our board.. The article states this was a Ray Smith's Fly called the Red Fox and not the Kaaterskill as I earlier had surmised.. Terry grew up on the Esopus in the Catskills, where Ray Smith's Red Fox originated. This fly must have had some real meaning for Terry, because when he joined this forum back in 2003 (4 years before he wrote the article for the newsletter) he choose the Kaaterskill handle and the Red Fox photo for his avatar. THere has to be a link. I will continue to search. Thanks to CRCADIS for suggesting the Ozark FlyFishers newsletter - it is a great read and Terry's pieces are very good. Howard

" Terry grew up on the Esopus in the Catskills, where Ray Smith's Red Fox originated."
Not too surprising. The Esopus used to be my main trouting haunt and the first Red Fox I ever saw was on the counter of Folkert's Bros. in Phoenicia. It was widely considered to be one of the very best searching patterns on that stream's many long glides. I've never seen it as popular (or effective, but this may just be a confidence game) anywhere else. |
