Ingvar Nilsson makes an awesome raised pillar reel, but no externally adjustable drag.

There's always the time tested Hardy Bougle. I'd say that Ted Godfrey's Perfectionist is one of the most beautiful raised pillar reels available, and it has an adjustable drag.
Wish I'd bought one before the price went through the roof.

Godfrey's Heritage BiMetal also fills the bill.

Schukken Design has as gorgeous a reel what am, honey lamb,
and at a price commensurate with its beauty--that is, far, far beyond the means of a humble hillsborn boy. To my uncertain knowledge, the only member of our forum tribe who has a Schukken raised-pillar is Ken M 44 (Sir Kenneth Ken of Old Hereford, the Knight Whose Waders Seldom Leak, Moderatus Britannicus, etcetera, etcetera, and so forth). If we asked him, nicely of course, maybe he'd post a picture. But be forewarned: I drool every time I look at the Schukken titanium raised-pillar reel at Just-Reels. And cry, too. It could get wet around this thread.

Sheesh Bill you can be really creepy ... but it is still good to see you back and on for(u)m -
anyway here you go (drool hankies at the ready because it is still for sale This is an anodised alloy version and not the ultra expensive titanium ;
Now just keep your promise to keep Black Hills Paul away

Ken,
You can always be counted on. It's purty, very purty, titanium or not! And certainly one of the best modern raised-pillar reels one is likely to find. But me "creepy"? Okay, in return for your graciousness, I promise never to mention BlackHillsPaul, my grand uncle, the deservedly revered missionary to the Sioux Nation, Dakota Territory, whose scalp is still proudly displayed in the tourist tepee at Mt. Rushmore. Deal? BHB

I have the Hardy Bougle in MK IV, it look like unless I want to spend $1600.00 to $4000.00

Well, certainly, the Peerless is available for a lot less than that, as is the Bradley. You could probably find a used Ingvar Nilsson for quite a bit less.
I've also sold several of the Schukken Design RP in aluminum, both new and used for a lot less than that. By the way, I own and use the Schukken Classic in
ti and, although a tad heavy, it is one sweet reel. Looks aside, what impresses me most about his reels are the ultra-smooth drags. I used a Schukken RP 8/9 in
aluminum to fish for Atlantic salmon in Iceland (and elswhere) and never failed to be amazed at its quality drag.

JR SPEY,
Could you post the address for Schukken Design Reels or for some shops which carry them? So far all I can come up with is Just-Reels, which lists only his titanium models. I'd be especially interested in learning more about the aluminum raised-pillar reels since your praise of their performance has stirred interest. These contacts should be helpful both to Bamboo Don, whose thread this is, and to all here who have a hankering for raised-pllar reels. Thanks. BHB |

Bamboo Don wrote:A reel doesn't have to cost $1000 or more to be a great reel. The Bougle MK IV is a fine reel. Not the jewelry like quality of a Godfrey or Janciuras, but still a fine reel that does the job. |

you should look at the peerless as it seems to be in the price range you are looking for.

BlackHillsBill wrote: But if you read the copy carefully, I think it says that he can order the aluminum models. Contact him directly for prices and length of time for waiting on one. I don't think there is another US dealer and as he only makes about a dozen or two reels a year I'm not sure if he has any other dealers. One other comment: Stefan Brusky, who is a member of this board and whose reels many of us have ogled when he's posted photos of them, is working on a raised pillar model that should be available in a couple of months. No word yet on prices, but I'm betting it'll be under $1K, and his stuff is gorgeous and getting better all the time. |

Godfrey's Raised Pilar Hertiage Bi-Metal | #19 | ||
|
I just saw on Ted Godfrey's website that he's re-introduced his raised pillar bi-metal reel. I've always preferred the look of these to the black
side plate reels. Can anyone speak to the quality and effectiveness of the drag on these reels?
Thanks, Geary |

I have a few of these, both the old model and newer Heritage series. The drags are very smooth in operation and adjustments in drag settings seem linear to
me. These are very nice reels.
