bwoemerger wrote: bwoemerger, You did a very fine job on the completion of your rod. I'd like to someday accomplish the same level of finish. It seems from your last picture that you finished the wraps separately instead of the entire blank after wrapping? If so, mind if you let me know how you managed to "end" the varnish on the edges of the wraps w/o seemingly running out too much onto the blank? I'm no rodmaker but hopefully will do one or two rod finishes myself at some point and it befuddles me how you kept it to such a good seal on the wraps but with minimum overlap. I like the complete look on your rod! Gets my juices going...

thegubster wrote:Jeremy...you are correct in that I do finish my wraps separately. I usually put a finish on the blank and it could be a dipped spar varnish or a hand rubbed oil finish. After that has fully dried, I will then wrap the rod. I like to have a layer of finish between the guides and the bare cane and it will also make replacing a guide alot easier if I ever needed to do so. Another reason is I just don't like the thought of dipping the entire rod after wrapping and having to clean varnish off the guides. Anyway, after I have wrapped with gossamer silk, I then put a thin coat of finish on each wrap and make sure not to put too much as this is when it could spill beyond the edge of the wrap. The silk will really soak up the finish and hold it within the shape of the wrap as long as too much is not applied. If any does manage to go over, you can easily wipe it off before it sets. I use a small brush for subsequent coats until I am happy with the final outcome. Another tip....if you are going to do clear wraps, do the first coat with flexcoat lite and then do the rest with spar varnish. This really helps in cutting down the "shimmers" or micro bubbles in the wraps. Otherwise, they really stand out on a clear wrap and are nearly impossible to avoid with just straight varnish. Hope that answers your question
Here is the rod that I finished out prior to the GWrod. It was built on an old stock blank. You can tell by the pictures that it could use one more coat of varnish on the wraps, but it was really a "sharpening your skills" build and I just never bothered to go back and put the extra coat on. First go at the rattan as well and that was quite an experience but it turned out good as it had an olive tint to it that actually matched the whole green motif. The double tipping on each side of each wrap took me forever but I thought it had a nice look to it. It is a rather large and heavy rod at 8ft and it will cast a 6 or 7wt line but I think it really turned out nice and it does catch fish. I have since installed a fighting butt that can be added for steelhead if I ever go.

Thanks Forrest. And I appreciate that flexcoat lite tip as well. I never knew this.

A late model South Bend 323 9' 3/2 for a HDH.
Shows little signs of use. Look forward to "hooking" it up with some smallmouthes tomorrow! I particularly like the cork insert on the seat and the green wraps tipped black.

new quad in the house | #1246

just got my new tim zietak quad
, 8 ft , 5 wt , i have been waiting
for this rod as i kinda got a little crazy for these quads ,this is one that will be in my drift boat for the season , it will be getting lots & lots of
good use when guideing ,a true working rod ,
i have a few nice rods now and wanted some of the better ideals from my other rods made into this one , i really like flamed rods and tim did this one a little darker the way i like the Paul Young flamed look , he also matched a downlocking reel seat from my dana gray quad for this rod , and on my mario wj rod it has a peckerhead handle and i really like it for the feel , so tim went and did as i requested , and last the wraps , olive with black tippings , i had seen a few and he had to do some test till he hit the colour that i really liked , after looking this rod over from top to bottom many times , it's a great deal and anyone looking for a super nice qaud , you can't beat his price's , he is way undervalued for what his rods go for , this is as good as alot of $ 1800 to $2500 rods that i have seen and handled and own ,

That Zietak quad is very nice. He is underrated for sure. He's been making quads for a long time and his rods speak for themselves. He's a nice
fella as well and from what I can tell is very willing to work with his customers to get them the rod they desire. Congrats and enjoy fishing it. I look
forward to seeing a picture with that rod and one of those huge trout from your river. Tight lines.

Got a new rod lately? #2 | #1252

I got out for a few hours last evening with a new-to-me FET Special that I bought from Rick Taupier over the winter. It's a 1920's-1930's era rod.
The rod had clearly been fished often, but it was well cared for and in very nice original condition. It's a 9 foot, 6 weight with a medium action. I'd
had it out early in the season a couple times fishing bucktails with a plastic line and split shot on the leader, but last night I finally got to fish it with
a silk line and soft hackles. Wow. The rod made even me look good. Every cast was effortless. In close. Out long. Roll casts. I felt like a was
"thinking" my flies out there. This is my fourth FET (all from the 30's or older), and the Thomas rods continue to amaze me.

I still do fish the Heddon once a while despite having a tough time deciding which rod to fish . I am fascinated by your search for Sedgewicks and Edwards... they are
beautiful creations. In fact, that Zeitak was a result of reading Black's book and very fun discussions with Tim on how to create the ultimate
Edwards/Carlson saltwater rod.

Yesterday I received this absolute gem from my friend Bob Nunley. It is as if he'd read my mind! Not only does it look marvellous...it fishes beyond my wildest expectations! It's 7.5' 3/2 for a true 3 weight. It has a deep flexing medium action with reserve power that turns over a DT-3 silk with incredible delicacy and accuracy. I'm going to Christen it on Silver Creek next week in memory of my friend Roger Lampman. His ashes will be scattered on Silver Creek.

Michael that is a stunning looking rod, perfectly matched with the raised pillar reel, although it would look great with an old Martin reel probably. The rug
is very cool also.

Thanks Martin,
As I told Nunley..."My joy is beside myself"! The rug is a small Afghan Baluchi bag. I've been trying for a couple of decades to get folks to associate Afghan rugs with trout fishing. Not many can take the leap! How about Ian Tyson's 'Navaho Rug"? Afgantrout
